Very nice shot. If I had the 1.4 maybe I could get that close too, but alas I do not

No need for 400mm+ here...

Vivitar Series 105mm F/2.5 Macro (with Raynox DCR-250 for the second shot, x-posted from the Show Me Your Insects thread).

Despite any statements to the contrary, the 1.4X does cause some loss of IQ. I'm not at all certain that an image taken with the 300 + 1.4X would have better IQ than the same subject, same distance, 300 alone, then a deeper crop in PP. From images posted on another thread, it appears that the new 150~450 @ 450mm has better IQ than the 300 + 1.4X. Telextenders were really developed to provide cropping for chromes which were very difficult to crop after processing

Taken with K3 and Sigma 170-500mm. This is an old Sigma model that I got for $450 New Zealand dollars. A bargain for an infrequently used lens. I always try to shoot F8 with this lens.

I must say that shooting large telephoto lenses isn't really that much fun. They are very cumbersome to use.
