Originally posted by wtlwdwgn Nice night shots. I don't mind the railing as it helps to give a sense of depth. It does look a bit accidental though. Looking at the Molson sign and the sky I would say that it's maybe a stop overexposed. Just my $0.02.
Thanks all for the thoughful responses, folks!
I've decided to keep the railing. It's the majority opinion, but was also my feeling prior to posting. I think it is helped by the fact that the line it makes is echoed by the lines in the water, and so it doesn't feel out of place for me. (I did have another shot with great light from the first day - just a bit more purple than the one posted - where the rail was at the very edge of the frame and out of focus and was just a distracting blurry black blob. But here, after some reflection, I do feel it has its place.)
BTW, it's really amazing how quickly the light changes during blue hour.
wtlwdwgn, thanks for the comment on exposure. The original was shot at -7/10 eV, then brought up in post. It's always tough for me to gauge how much to make a shot "pop" - there's so much competition for attention out there... (I use Gimp so I'm dealing with levels and curves tools and can't simply add X eV to the exposure.) Following your comment, I rolled this one back to a previous,
slightly more muted edit (and updated my post above since the update broke the bbcode).
Thanks again!
