Not aiming for artistic or technical points, but had the K3 in the car yesterday morning.. a nice frosty morning with good light in the Pioneer Valley..

With the FA 50 Macro, Fallasburg Bridge one of the few remaining covered bridges in Michigan. The security camera was added after someone burned down another covered bridge not too far away. That one was the oldest in Michigan. This bridge was built in 1871 and is still open to vehicle traffic.

Nice image I've seen those structures before in books and films, and wondered why they're covered. Am I missing something obvious?

To avoid the accumulation of snow during winter time which can lead to structural failure

Thank you, there are few reasons for covered bridges. As was stated above, it helps extend the lifespan of the bridge greatly. Back when this bridges were built there was no such thing as treated lumber and even treated lumber only has a lifespan of 25-40 years. Another reason was to get horses to cross over water without being afraid. They also provided a form of shelter for those out in the elements traveling.
