There are so many nice photographs in this thread. I hope some day I can be half a proficient as this. My son just gave me his K3 and I've never picked up a dslr before so Its a bit daunting at the moment but looking here it seems I've come to the right place to get started.
First get to know the exposure relationship between shutter speed, aperture, sensitivity (ISO) and the impact on your image. Then get to know lens field of view and its impact on your image. This is in my opinion an excellent tool to get started with - to be followed by experimentation to duplicate the look using your new K-3.
Camera Sim (original - free to use)

And yes, there is a LOT of knowledge to be had from fellow members of the Pentax Forums. Don't take yourself too seriously and join in on the fun! (and my motto is you learn more from your mistakes than your masterpieces).

Over the past decade we have been seeing increasingly larger numbers of these birds spending their summers here in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Ever hear their cry? Sounds like a loud version of swinging a barn door on rusty hinges back and forth. I don't find myself doing much bird photography, but maybe I should try to grab an image or six of one of the local flocks.

Similar to advice I gave my daughter when I was teaching her to drive a car: Every frightening near accident will teach you more that you remember longer than hours of uneventful driving.

And if you are lucky, your daughter learns even from non events. When I was teaching my daughter, we drove an original Toyota Van LE -- backing had to be on the mirrors because you couldn't see out of the back window through the forest of head rests and the window was 4 ft (3.3 m) from the ground anyway. She had a best friend whose father taught her to back on the mirrors as well. When it came time for their driving tests, the examiner had them both back for a whole block. He couldn't believe that backing on the mirrors was possible. )

I do remember those days with both a son and a daughter. The example you provide has more serious consequences however. Their father suffered too many near heart attacks. Looking at bad images is much less stressful!

I spent the afternoon out replacing the yoke on one of our tandem boats I am converting into a solo boat. There were butterflies and a few moths, so I kept the camera close, but in the end, just flowers.

Not a butterfly, but hey. What can you do?

They have a slightly different perspective than yesterday with the macro lens but surprisingly similar as well.

One of my companions. There's always time to stop and throw a ball for my extremely patient dogs. Waiting for me to look up.
