It doesn't always excel, that 55-300, but it also is extraordinarily good from time to time. The only way I criticize this lens is I don't think you get the same percentage of out standing images using it, but it's like 10% to 15% or something like that. A great deal of the time it punches way above it's weight class.
I've found the same thing. It is restricted mostly by the aperture limits, I think, and that leads to slower shutter speeds and/or higher ISO settings than are best for the sensor.

I agree with Albert. The problem is that you really have to shoot at f7.1 or f8 to get good results at 300mm and if you are going to keep your shutter speed up, you end up needing iso 800, even in pretty good light. I don't shoot much with long lenses -- mainly when I take my kids to the zoo and so it is fine for my purposes.

These all shot with DA 55-300 at the New Orleans Zoo.

I heard about a movie shoot in Port Colbourne about D Day, so I snuck in to see what I could see. It was a bit like watching paint dry, but a few exciting moments.

Very nice. Just the right amount of light to provide lots of detail. Looks good at full size on Flickr.

From a week ago, we've been away visiting.....

From today, I finally got an image of that black squirrel that's been hanging around. I spent the kitchen window and use the Tamron 300 2.8 with the 2x to get it.

The pictures I posted directly above were everything I took in the last week, so much rain and bad weather.
