So, finally, my initial impressions of the K-3...

First I need to say that the JPEG settings are pretty crappy. And this is not an easy camera to do PP in RawTherapee, the data seems pretty different from my other Pentax camera, it reacts differently to sliders... but I think I can learn to get good results from it.

From Santa Catarina, Brazil. All with DA*16-50mm f/2.8.

Lots of rocks in beaches and in between beaches... so wood bridges are common.

This is not dirty water... the algae in the river works like "tea leaves" in the warm water and colors the water like this.

More rocks...

K-3 and DA 18-135
I didn't pay attention o my settings, which ended up being ISO 400 and 1/8000s, I'm not sure I've ever shot at 1/8000s before in my life.

I'm just going to cover my eyes and pretend I didn't see the 70-200 images. The DFA* 70-200 doesn't exist.

I found it used in Calgary, Alberta for 1800 CDN $ in like-new condition on eBay. It's the most expensive lens I ever bought so I hope it performs well. I still have to try it on the K1.

Best Regards, Norm !

More details needed. Have you tried some alternate 'styles'. I use 'natural' rather than 'bright'. Or could the issue be at a different point such as monitor or processor? As i dont know what your issues are dont know how concerns can be addressed.

Well I should have said "IMHO" but I thought that was implied.

In my humble opinion, the K-S1 JPEGs are very useable right off the camera - I use Portrait and Natural quite often, and I have a preset based on the Muted setting that I am also quite happy with.

Even the K-50, while not quite as good as the K-S1 JPEG engine, gives me results I'm quite happy with.

Not so much with the K-3... the default settings are quite "flat" and the small contrast boost that is more than enough to give some "bite" withr my other cameras, still isn't enough. And if I increase contrast and saturation more, it ruins the skin tones... I'll just have to continue to play with it until I'm happy.

I can get much better results with RAW, but part of my workflow has always been to have JPEGs as well, especially when I'm out with the family and my wife wants pictures she can quickly share.

Okay, now i can understand what you are getting at Christian. Thanks for the full answer. I use photoshop so have a different workflow and different challenges. I seldom use jpegs straight from camera, but i have always thought that the need for pp was operator error rather than camera error.

All my photos get processed in some way so I just havent thought about getting jpegs to be okay from the get go. Lots of different subject matter and contexts so i am not sure one formula will match all picture taking situations. (Following a tip i read in a magazine artcle some years ago one common strategy i do is pull the black level slider up a bit and pull the white level slider down a bit rather than using the contrat slider.)

I am speculating that the need for pp varies depending upon the lenses used--and of course upon camera processing program, photographer shooting skill as well as a few other factors. I have recently been shooting with the Leica R-emarit-vario 35-70mm and the Zeiss APO Sonnar 135mm f 2.0, and have experienced many images that it seems to me could only be degraded by post processing. I am not trying to be argumentative, but would be very interested in views about post processing vs lens selection.
