Pretty much anyone who follows college basketball in the US knows about the game between #14 ranked VCU and #25 ranked Virginia that came down to the very last second. I was there, and although I didn't get that "million dollar shot" of the winning three-pointer, I did give the K-3 a workout and got some great shots (the white balance is a little off because I'm not used to John Paul Jones Arena's lighting situation.









Reaction to the game-winner. The focus missed because I didn't act quickly enough, but the shot was still usable.



The K-3 is back at LensRentals.com now, so there'll be no more photos taken with it from me for a while until I get one, but I can conclude that the K-3 is a fairly good camera for sports action despite what the review on this site says. It's no worse than the K-5 IIs, and it gives some pretty decent results. The problem is, it isn't a whole lot better than the K-5 IIs. The AF isn't any faster in low light and continuous AF is only so-so in this sort of environment. (If they played outdoors during the daytime, it'd probably be a different story.) At this point I'm torn between getting a K-3 and just getting another K-5 IIs to use as a second camera and get rid of my old K-5.

The park was taken with the kit lens and the city with my 50mm f1.4. I took an identical one with the kit lens set @50 (same aperture and speed) and it didn't come close. I have much to learn about processing. And that if you reset the camera, it defaults back to JPEG only ( *&^$&!).

@Will - Since the K-3 AF has way more settings than the IIs, the first question we need to ask is did you shoot using the same settings? Otherwise it may be an apples to oranges comparison.

You're probably right. I used identical settings on both cameras.

I think they are about the same at high iso. I don't know that there is a big difference. Maybe as much as between a K20 and K7 (a lot of people claimed those sensors were far apart, but they looked the same to me). With both cameras I can shoot to iso 6400 with a little bit of noise reduction, which seems to be the ceiling for APS-C for now.

At low iso, there is definitely more detail in the files, at least as long as you are using a decent lens and are stabilized.

Quick question. Perhaps this is basic, but I'm new to DSLRs. Is the purple in the blown out areas of the photos I posted CA or an artifact of sensor clipping? I was using the 18-135 on those.
