On p 2 it is argued that it is "a signal important in intergender communication". Not conclusive though.

Thanks for feedback on the photos!
Sure is! I would think it must be to impress the ladies (to rephrase your quote...).

Ruaha and Selous are on my bucket list. Thanks for sharing some inspiration! Well done with that buffalo - they are notoriously hard to expose correctly, and they seem to have magical powers when it comes to hiding behind obscuring vegetation!

So many national parks, so little time!

I'm awed by so many of these pictures, they are just awesome. This thread has been fun to go through. After looking through them I decided that I wouldn't post here - I'm way too intimidated. But then I thought that there are those who are considering the camera who might be more like me - just average picture-takers. So here's a few that I've taken while just walking around in the past couple of weeks, since I got the camera. I'm still trying to sort out what processing I want to do, I haven't gotten settings quite the way I want them.

A before work labor strike brought out the press (taken after first light, but well before sunrise):

I sure wouldn't want to have to carry that camera!

Acorn woodpecker:

I don't do much birding, but wanted to try the K3 with the DA*300 and 1.7AFA (this is hand-held). They all seem to work reasonably well together. Couldn't believe how quick it is on continuous shooting - I could fill up a memory card very, very quickly if I wasn't careful.

Lily:

I really need to get a camera plate for the QR clamp on my tripod - I didn't think either the K20 or K5's L-brackets fit the K3 well enough to use. At the moment I'm hand-holding close-ups and macros and getting mixed results because of that. I ran into dof problems with the lily - this is two frames stacked in CS6 - but I thought it came out reasonably well.

Before Practice:

Another walk before work - preparing the field before football practice. This is a stitched panorama, stitched in CS6.

These next pictures are for all of you that live further north and east of me, who are suffering in the cold and snow. I want you to see how beautiful the weather is in sunny, bright, warm Southern California. Just to make you jealous of our good fortune out here.

Last night I received the DA*16-50 that I ordered over Black Friday weekend. The picture below is one of my first photos in daylight. I really like this lens, though it needed adjustment on the K3. I'm not positive I've got it set right, will play with it more tomorrow. One of the tasks I had planned for today was to take off the netting I put around my grapevine and trim it back. I decided that I would wait a day before attempting the task:

A few hours later my front yard looked like this:

The sun came out and tried to melt a little of that funny white stuff. It didn't do a very good job:

Yes, these pictures were really taken in Southern California.
beautiful shots...I love the woodpecker!!

You people keep blowing me away and inspiring me to figure out the digital workflow (K-3 is my first dSLR).

These aren't "critical work", just exercises in learning the camera, quirks with using manual lenses, etc. Processed with RPP, Auto exposure with about 250 sharpening added, 3x3 micro contrast, defringe, auto CA correction, a bit of shadow recovery and playing with black level.

SMC Pentax-M f2.8 28mm

Kit 18-135

Kit 18-135

Given the focal length I keep finding myself in, the new Sigma f1.8 18-35 is making me drool. The kit lens isn't bad, but it's too danged slow! Time to start saving my pennies.

So many great photos here! Wow!!! Haven't yet learned how to post pix to the thread directly, but I've added a few more shots with the new HD 55-300 and K-3 to the User Photo Gallery, all handheld, but still pretty sharp by my standards. Just love the way the new HD 55-300 works with the K-3, a real improvement from my old 55-300 and K-5.
