Thanks for clarification, my friend. I shoot RAW only, so, based on your experience, should I go with similar NR settings that you using for JPEG pictures, or you have some other advice?
The NR settings only affect JPEG images so it won't matter for you.

BTW, what software is the best for NR in PP. For now, I'm using Lightroom. Is there better solution?
Most of the time I use Lightroom 5 for processing my RAWs, and it does NR very well. Sometimes for real challenging noisy shots I might use something else, but LR does the job 95% of the time.

Auto ISO is supposed to be pretty strong on the K-3 and Ed from "Photouniverse" sez to turn it off to maintain sharpness.
What has Auto ISO got to do with high ISO NR? Auto ISO is one of my favorite features. Surely I can leave it on while turning off all NR?

Indeed you can. Auto ISO has nothing to do with the camera NR settings. Different menu settings entirely.

I believe Ed was was talking about Auto ISO noise reduction not Auto ISO.

That makes sense. I thought the reference was about when it wants to raise the ISO when on auto, thus generating more noise.
But your interpretation probably makes more sense.

Cross posted from the Discus your 300mm plus lenses club.

It's too cold to go outside much today, (-30 C) so a few window shots just to keep me in the groove. I may try going out in a bit. Over the summer I built a new deck and the porch rail is 3 feet further back, so I can shoot from the kitchen table, as opposed to moving 3 feet back in the room. The 400 is still a bit tight, even for the small birds, I didn't even try the Jays, they would have been head shots. At least I have sun today.

K-3- SMC A 400 ƒ5.6 @ ƒ8, approx 1/1000 secs. MF
