Coireach a Ba at Rannoch Moor. A five bracketed shot with the DA*16-50 and merged in Photomatix. It was very windy at the time and although shot on a tripod there was some mild camera shake. This seems to result is gentle HDR processing resulting in what looks like more aggressive tonemapping. Still I quite like the slightly painterly result. I am working on converting a survey grade tripod tribrach adaptor to fit 3/8ths tripod heads to allow more stable setups in windy condtions. Not ideal for moving to far off the beaten track, but I think it will help.

And another. This time 5 bracketed exposures handheld at ISO 800. Passed through DxO Optics Pro with Prime Noise Reduction and a little sharpening then merged in Photomatix.

I apologize for the number of photos, but I thought some would be interested in a few shots with the DA 560mm (only two weeks old).

BIF are still a work in progress

Beautiful pictures! So jealous of the snowy owl pics I have spent the last month trying to find one with no luck. Outstanding job.

I would be one of those that do appreciate the pictures and feel you should not have to apologize for posting them! If you don't mind me asking can you hand hold that lens while shooting BIF? Looks to me like you have it down pretty good....

They look great... time for the great 250-600 vs DA 650, knock down drag out, fight to the death IQ grudge match. Not that I can afford either, but one has to have more drool value than the other, right?

Just tried the AFC for an event locally, OCBC Cycle Singapore.

Seems to miss its intended target at times, but still most of the images came out good =D

A few from last week.

K-3, DA 18-55. Common hazel (Corylus avellana) taking advantage of a gap created by the death of a Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris).

DA* 50-135. Whooper swans (Cygnus cygnus), Finland's national bird, with Canada geese (Branta canadensis) and what I think are mallards (Anas platyrhynchos)

DA* 50-135. Eurasian Blackbird (Turdus merula).

I think someone with more long lens experience could hand hold this lens while shooting BIF no problem. I'm coming from a Sigma 150-500 where I could never reliably focus on BIF even with a tripod, so I'm a novice in this category. With the 560, I've taken a few hand held shots of a rough legged hawk in flight that came out pretty well. It's early and I trust I will improve with practice.

My attempts at hand holding while shooting perched birds have not turned out very well (I start to shake too much). I used a tripod (sidekick) or bean bag for the shots posted.

Price wise, this lens is coming down. Frustrated with the 150-500, I was leaning toward the Sigma 500 but really wanted WR living in the Pacific Northwest. I found this for $500 more than the Sigma and pulled the trigger.
