candgpics - those are some very good questions and ones that I struggled with too. I wanted the K5IIs for it's known performance but I was nervous about the flash results. I shoot a lot of concerts where lighting is very difficult and mixed but I am venturing into portraiture. With portraits and weddings flash will become more important.

So far the K3 has done really well. Coming from a KX and K200D it has taken some getting used to. It does underexpose a bit but that might be a Pentax thing

The first concert that I did with the K3 was The Motels and it was VERY DARK and I was at 12,800 most of the night. The very first photo of the shoot was a backstage interview with singer, Martha Davis. She was only lit with an overhead fluorescent light in a hallway. I shot that at 12,800 and pushed to 16,000 because I was nervous and underexposed by 1 stop.

I postprocess in LR5 only. I thought about some plugins but I haven't gotten any yet.

Since then I have shot several concerts and I have been pleased.

Thanks guys. Actually I have tried a grey card but it was hard to use in that light. Maybe I need more practice with it.

I shoot in AWB and then use the auto color feature in LR5. After that I use the temp slider and tint slider to fine tune the skin tones. As for lenses, I use my DA 16-50mm and my DA* 50-135mm almost exclusively.

I use DA 12-24mm, DA 35mm F2.4 and even DA 18-250mm on occasion

Did you intend to focus on the cows butt or just on the closest thing to you?

john5100:

Thank you for the comments and examples.

I appreciate your point of view.

I will continue to look at my options.

I am somewhat hopeful that a new Pentax model will come out later this year--maybe a full frame with the D800 chip--which gives an approx 15 megapixel crop image, I believe, for DA/DA* lenses. That chip would provide a bit of a bump in high ISO, though, I really do not need the larger file sizes.

Anyway, thank you again!

K-3 in Indiana

We are not the most photographic state but here are a few K-3 shots from recent walks and around the house.

Good call on the D800 competitor. I would like to see an A7R rival.

For my purposes a K-3 already kicks the D800, A7rs behinds, if you took this same picture with a D800 or A7r, you'd have to use a 600mm lens instead of a 400, and the subject would still be smaller, because of the k-3s smaller pixels and and therefore more magnification. Now if what you're saying is you don't value what a K-3 brings to the table that's fine, but why would you come into a K-3 images thread to tell us you don't value what a K-3 has to offer, and claim you need cameras that don't match it at what it does best. It's like coming into an apples thread and saying you want oranges. The ones who are here for the apples. don't really care about Pentax making an orange.

You guys need to be posting in a more appropriate thread.... seriously. When a D800 or A7r can match this, I'll consider them. But why would I pay thousands more, for an inferior image?

Hi normhead:

It was not my intent to create any confusion or start a critical debate/post in the wrong forum.

I have been very impressed by several members' K3 high ISO photos, but for the short time I had my K3 I did not experience the same success. Perhaps I had a dud and that is why it was a new item that really was in fact "used"--someone returned it.

The images I shot with the K3 at moderate to high ISOs (1600 to 6400) were in line with what most of the other images posted by members I had seen--good, but a dip below the k5/k5ii/k5iis.

I really love my Pentax gear and though I have been tempted to jump ship because of the low light shooting I have been doing more of in recent years, I have stayed. I really like the ergonomics of Pentax cameras and the K3 looked and felt great.

I just tend to live in the mid to upper ISOs and am trying to eek out as much performance as I can without getting silly and spending large amounts of money for a D4/5D MKIII--though I have contemplated getting a 610 or a 6D and perhaps a couple of 1.4 primes to shoot when I am close up in mma matches/bjj meets/musicians at nightclubs and the lighting is really bad/uneven.

I have been fortunate that in the mma matches so far I have been able to shoot around ISO 2000 or so and making large prints (16x20) or doing significant post processing has worked out. It is when the ISOs get a little higher that image breakdown occurs at the image sizes/post processing levels at which I am working.

So, I am forever on the lookout for squeaking out some additional high ISO quality.

Thank you for your comments.

to each their own. give me the best high-ISO-capable camera and I will still try to stay under ISO800, because I just don't believe in amplification. but that's me, equally entitled to have an opinion

I really think the Nikon D4s and Sony A7s have changed the game for high ISO shooters, using a very large sensor site rather than amplification, after all, if you can collect enough photons, amplification isn't necessary... and if high ISO is important to you, that's what you should be looking at.

Norm, point taken.

I have no intention of leaving Pentax either. I just like the size of the A7. With Pentax engineering and that size camera, it would be unstoppable.
