Interior of an Icelandic fishing station. Traditionally fishing was done by a consortium of farmers, sometimes related, lead by one who owned a boat. Fishing was mostly a winter occupation, and a source of supplementary food and income, using long multi-hook lines (up to a kilometer long). Fish were either dried or salted, sometimes both at the same station. This is a salting hut. Can anyone identify the thing with the hole below the window?

Interesting. No idea what the thing is.

The account of dried and salted fish sounds like a Chinese fish preservation method which I have heard is associated with increased rates of cancer of the throat and gullet. Is there any evidence of that in Iceland?

I'll take a stab at it. Looks like something you would put in the hole in the ice to keep from freezing back closed so you could get your net back out. Just my guess.

I don't know of any unusual incidence of cancer among Icelanders. Of course, they have thousands of years - going back to their Scandinavian ancestry - to adjust to any problems.

I'll hold off on identifying the object.

Rondec, thanks for posting all of these great photos. The 24-70 shots seem different than your other Pentax photos... as if they appear more muted and smoother (yet still very sharp) than, say, the DA* 16-50. Am I seeing something that isn't there or might that be your observation, too?

It is a little hard to say. I don't think the 24-70 is quite as contrasty as the 16-50. As to colors, we are moving into winter and the colors here are more drab than at other times of the year. I did a couple of comparison shots between the 24-70 and the 16-50, for what it is worth...

Very imaginative. It is the cervical (neck) vertebrae of a good-sized whale. The view is back from the head which would rest against the large solid areas at right & left. The central hole is for the spinal cord coming out of the brain. Whales like all mammals except a few of the Xenarthra have seven cervical vertebrae, but they are fused together into a single short unit.

wpresto, that is a fascinating object. I have never, ever seen whale vertebrae before. It's no wonder I had no idea what it was.
