Thank you everyone. We had a ton of fun!!
The set up:
Flash:
We had 3 flashes. One behind the cup (with a blue gel for the blue shot) and 2 in the front on either side. Each flash set to 1/64th power for faster recycle time.
Fill the cup with liquid of your choice (little thicker viscosity the better) Why the count down? Just before we dropped the ball, we shot at 8 fps so catch the right moment. The best would be to have a laser trigger or sound trigger but we didn't have one. With the flash set to 1/64 power, they recycled enough to keep up with the fps.
Ambient light:
The key to freezing the motion is to set your exposure so the ambient light is black. The only visible light is from the flashes. The way we did that was at or near sync speed and an aperture of F11 or so to make sure your DoF is enough.
Focus:
Manual focus on the cup so you don't have to worry about the camera auto focusing
Yep, clean up was the toughest part. We had to clean up in between each attempt at a shot.
Important tip:
Cover your flashes and anything important (because they are close to flying paint) with plastic or else you will paint your equipment. That would suck...
