Embarking on a new career in interior/architecture/real estate photography. I had no idea how the 'pros' produced such fantastic final images. Now I know. Been practicing my lighting using flash; specifically 'one light technique'. This image was shot through the 12-24mm and created using series of ambient images mixed with a series of flash images, which I used as a light source a single Yongnuo 560IV. The room was extremely warm so I bumped the WB to 5600K. Editing entailed CA fixing in ACR. Loaded and stacked multiple files into CS5, and working off of one base layer I created layer masks and brushed in flash and ambient light where needed. Finished up in Nik. The goal, obviously, is to give the impression of one light source and not to have final product look too flash heavy. It's challenging work, but I'm really enjoying it thus far. P.S. this was done for a client who was about to do a reno and wanted before images. Total images used: 8. So much to learn.

What you have achieved is "natural" look, successfully blending eight images into what looks like a single well illuminated, correctly exposed image. Impressive.

Too cool - care to share if how exactly you set these shots up?
Thank you everyone. We had a ton of fun!!

The set up:

Flash:
We had 3 flashes. One behind the cup (with a blue gel for the blue shot) and 2 in the front on either side. Each flash set to 1/64th power for faster recycle time.

Fill the cup with liquid of your choice (little thicker viscosity the better) Why the count down? Just before we dropped the ball, we shot at 8 fps so catch the right moment. The best would be to have a laser trigger or sound trigger but we didn't have one. With the flash set to 1/64 power, they recycled enough to keep up with the fps.

Ambient light:
The key to freezing the motion is to set your exposure so the ambient light is black. The only visible light is from the flashes. The way we did that was at or near sync speed and an aperture of F11 or so to make sure your DoF is enough.

Focus:
Manual focus on the cup so you don't have to worry about the camera auto focusing

Yep, clean up was the toughest part. We had to clean up in between each attempt at a shot.

Important tip:
Cover your flashes and anything important (because they are close to flying paint) with plastic or else you will paint your equipment. That would suck...

Those cattle egrets are everywhere. We have some at our zoo too but not as residents--they flap over from the park across the street, looking to nick some food from the open air exhibits. The storks are cool, I don't think I've ever seen those before.

1. Drake Wood Duck (in breeding colors) and Drake Mallard

2. Drake Wood Ducks (in breeding colors)

3. Golden Eagle (photographed through netting) [back in the '60s, the Topeka Zoo became the World Famous Topeka Zoo when, in part because it was able to successfully hatch Golden Eagles in captivity

"former zoo director Gary Clarke said the idea sprung from the vast array of clippings the zoo amassed from newspapers around the world touting its innovative rain forest and successful hatching of American golden eagles. . . . 1971 -- First captive hatching and rearing of an American golden eagle." - ]CJ Online's T-Town News: Topeka Zoo famous for many reasons 06/18/98 | CJOnline.com

4 over kill - on a whim, I added the 1.4 rear converter, then the 2 Canada Geese walked right up to me no farther 4 feet away (no crop, hand held)
