I prefer the color version. The foreground leaves are better separated from the background trees.

until I started photographing these birds, I never noticed how the light affects whether you see a green head or a dark one, up to and including black

I am going to buck the trend and tell you I prefer the BW. For me, the color foreground distracts from what I consider to be the better subject, the forest and sun flare. It just seems more balanced. I know there are many rules for composition but is their such a thing as Feng Shui for photos? I think the BW has it. LOL
