Great shot. I believe that is the first image I have seen with a 63mm focal length. What lens is that?

Great shot for such a long distance. At 450/675mm that lens was really reaching out for you!

thanks

and looking back on the trip, I am very happy how I reacted when I lose the use of the 150-450mm during the trip

I had the 55-300mm PLM which did yeoman work but I didn't like it at all when I tried the 1.4 rear converter with it so that experiment didn't last long

and 300mm is well short of the 450mm

but I didn't let the damaged lens ruin the experience.

I was a little concerned that you were maybe taking too much equipment, or at least too many lenses, but it seems that a little redundancy was just the thing. Thinking back to my last safari, maybe 30 years ago, I believe I had a Sears K-mount camera--the KSX/35mm Sears SLR camera with 50mm and 135mm lenses. Not sure who made the camera, maybe Pentax or perhaps Ricoh.

you are correct - I had more than the minimum needed but by design

a back up DSLR

lenses that I intended to take and use for specific limited purposes only

and if needed I could have done without ( in a perfect world )

_____________

and I am glad I did since I could handle the room/weight and clutter

I would hate to think what the result would have been without the 300mm PLM

minimal:

one DSLR, one Telephoto, one wide angle

and risk disaster

_____

I had the ability to carry the equipment and the equipment ( except for the one lens I rented: the 20-40mm limited ) so why not?

Oh, oh! I was thinking of prime lenses as I tend to use them rather than zoom lenses, and was not thinking of an intermediate zoom setting. I do have a Tamron zoom lens, the Tamron 17-50mm f 2.8 Aspherical LD XR DiII SP, and it is a fine lens which I should use more.

This is a very good lens. I mainly shoot wedding and that lens rarely ever leaves my K3 on a wedding day.

Nice. I only saw these big cats in trees in the Lake Manyara Game Park, not too far from Mount Killy.

the value of a good experienced guide -

on our first trip in 2016 we and our guide John were driving down a road in the Serengeti which was obviously not used much and met another vehicle with only a guide and a tourist coming towards us.

of course, John stopped and talked to the other guide, a young one, told us - nothing down this way, don't waste your time. John told him to follow.

he did

eventually we found a sausage tree with at least 12 lions in it.but could not get real close.

[ even using a Tamron 70-300mm I had to later crop quite a bit for useful photos ]

I asked John how he knew they would be there, he said, well, I didn't know what tree but over the years I have always found them in this area at this time of day

I can imagine what the other tourist thought of his guide
