Rockin' the fair doing some testing. My DA*16-50mm started giving me some trouble so I bought a Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 to replace it. I use my DA 20-40 as well which does great!

All of these are at high ISO

John,

Awesome shots at such a high ISO. I am curious though, how did you tame the noise so well? Most of my shots at even 1600 ISO have lots of noise artifacts. I am shooting in .PEF raw format and have the high ISO noise reduction turned off.

Regards,

Ray

Ray,

Thank you for the nice comment. It took me a long time to get good at NR. I run the photos through LR Classic CC sharpening and NR. I set sharpening to 50ish, NR to 20, and masking to 10. If I'm not using LR Classic CC then I'll use DXO Photolab Pro. Their NR is amazing!

Outstanding! Please share information on your kit, particularly the lens you used.

Thanks! Technical info is always posted over at Flickr, but these were all shot using my usual D-FA 100mm WR with Raynox DCR-250, this time with an off-camera diffused Godox AD180 flash. (I also sometimes use a Godox V850ii.) This series kind of illustrates how you can easily vary the magnification on this lens combo, from about 0.8:1 at infinity focus on the lens, through to 2:1 at MFD. (Though the two lower magnification shots are probably not quite at infinity focus and the two higher ones not quite at MFD.) All four shots are single frames, as this insect was quite active.
