Thanks, Des. This helps a lot. I've been thinking of getting the DA-L 55-300 and wondered if I'd be better off with the HD-WR or PLM for my K-3.
I had the DA-L version, and it drove me crazy (not very far to be honest) because it didn't have quick shift. Judging by the responses, the PLM is the best, followed by the WR, followed by the rest, including the one I have. If I get enough shifts from the RCMP I'll get a PLM for my birthday present to myself in June. I'll be 18 dyslexically.

At those prices, plenty of room Ray! I'd still say get the 55-300 PLM if your budget will run to it - AF is way better, bokeh and rendering are better and it folds up to a compact size. Not to mention HD and WR, which the DA-L and plain DA 55-300 f4-5.8 lack. Apart from price (which is admittedly a good reason in itself) the only compelling reason to get the screwdriven AF models rather than the PLM IMO is for use on a camera that doesn't support KAF4 (K-5 series and older).
Thanks, Des. That is useful info. My K-3 will support the PLM version but I would also want to use the lens on my K10D. So that gives me something to think about. I'll keep a watch out to see what is available.

Here's LDN 1246 and LDN 1235 with my K3 at ISO 1600, a total of 10.4 hours of exposure on this one with 48x 180s and 120x 24 through my Borg 55FL astrograph which is 200mm fl at f/3.6. I had to do it over 3 nights.
