K-3 Purchasing Strategy

Hello all,

I haven't been around this Forum for a long time but I have a few questions revolving around purchasing a K-3. As of now I have a K10D and a K-5. Both are in great condition...almost. The viewfinder on the K-5 broke when it hit a ceiling fan when I had it mounted on a tripod. I will send it out to get it repaired within the next week or so and then it will be as good as new. The K-5 has less than 1000 shutter activations on it.

On the one hand I think selling the K10D body is the way to go. I have the kit lens from that era as well. Perhaps selling that with the body would make it more desirable. I also have two batteries for it and since they don't work in the K-5 I'd include those in the sale.

Another option is to keep the K10D and sell the K-5. Is the K-5 battery compatible with K-3? I know that really won't be the deciding factor to keep or sell...but I'm curious anyway. How much could I sell the K-5 for?

Suggestions are appreciated.

I need to donate so I can buy and sell on the market again.

Thanks...Blake

Keep the K10D - you won't get much for it in return anyway. At base ISO the quality of the files from that camera are stunning, I still use mine. It is highly likely that the K5 battery will be comparable with the K3.

yep... K-5, K-5II/s and K-3 all share the same battery... you should be good if you acquire the K-3 while keeping the K-5. I agree with others that you may not get much out of the K10D, but it would still good and use it for DA* SDM lens as a screw-drive lens if the SDM motor fails.

Sell both.

They are much the same cameras (ie. Pentax; aps-c; size), so the K3 ends up to be the better/newer one and the other 2 will be left on the shelf.

If not, then keep the K10D since it does not sell for much and has a CCD sensor.

I'd rather even sell it and get some other 2nd hand camera that offers something else. (eg. small size; non-bayer; m4/3; 1/1.7'; etc)

My few cents..

IMO- no reason to keep the K10D, if you get a K-3 it will really feel archaic (it already does beside the K-5 IMO). Sell it and use the money toward a nice new prime

I already have FA31, 43 and 77 primes plus the 100 mm macro (the first one that's built like a tank). So there's the obvious reason to not switch to Nikon or Canon. Though I did have an AE-1 and FM2...my favorite 35mm SLR was my MX.

I still have the K10D. Not really worth selling at this point. The main thing that keeps me from using it are stock focusing screen no good for my fast manual lenses, and no live view to check critical focus that way. But I can do superresolution (with PhotoAcute) with it, panos...could be useful. I used it a lot when the K-5 was in the shop...good to have a backup.

How much do you think I can sell the K-5 for that includes a battery and charger and neck strap and no lenses?

Anyone knows or the BG4 wil fit under the K3?
They pins and mechanical layout including the lock-pins looks the same, so it looks like it would fit.
I currently own a K7 with batterygrip en wouldn't like to also spend money at a new batterygrip.

It would also be nice to be able to use my KatzEye Focusing Screen from my K7, but Katz hasn't any info of a K3 screen on there site yet.

No, there is a new grip designed for the Pentax K3 - the BG5

I know there is a new grip, but does that really means the BG4 grip won't fit and/or work?
