Does LR5 support the K3? If so I'm surprised that the ACR update came that quickly.

Thought I saw a post saying LR 4.4 opened k-3 DNGs no problem?

yes, even 4.2 does - well that was supposed to be one of the key advantages of using DNG instead of some proprietary format...

Just shoot DNG and you never have to wait for Adobe. There may be some little bits of metadata that aren't recorded in the DNG, like whether the AA simulator is on or off, but all the important stuff - exposure, white balance, lens & body info - will be there.

Agreed on trying DNG. More universal. LR4 should definitely work with the K3 if you're using DNG format.

Adobe getting greedy? Just look at what they used to charge for fonts before there was an alternative to Postscript...

The DNG standard supports 4 or 5 metadata formats, and those formats are extensible (different implementations can have different metadata included), but if the photo manipulation software doesn't know about a particular piece of metadata, it can't use it (and probably can't display it unless the program's GUI is designed to display an unlimited number of values).

Having said that, if you already use software that can read DNG files, and your camera can output DNG files, use DNG. DNG is a wrapper or envelope over TIFF/EP data, that includes all of the metadata your camera outputs, and the files coming out of your camera aren't missing anything that is included in the PEF file. If your camera can't output DNG, then you become dependent on third party conversion software, and you might be better off to use the software specifically designed for your camera.

Yes, if you want both RX100II and K-3 support baked into Lightroom. But best to wait until LR 5.3 is released. The current 5.2 supports the RX100II, but not the K-3.

I also noticed today that Adobe in my country are offering a 20% discount on Lightroom until 29 November when buying through Adobe.com. Maybe it's the same in the US. Doesn't sound too greedy to me.

They are responsible to update new camera profiles and support for raw. Look at aperture.

For current products, maybe. But you've got v 4, which works for me with K3 DNG sample files.
Why don't you save your K-3 files as DNG and get on with it?
Aperture is current. And Apple's updates are on the system level.

As noted above V.5.2 of Lightroom supports your new camera. What's the problem. If after spending at least $2000 on new camera gear you are whining about a $50 required software upgrade, then your thread title is very telling. Digital photography is more than the camera, it is the software as well including any necessary costs which should be part of one's budget. Get on with using your new tools.
