With the external flash, put the camera mode dial to X, manually set the ISO to 200, focus, and see what happens.

That option is not in the settings anymore. Now its much easier ... once you find it. Just press the flash on the d-pad and at the end the last two options is like Master and controller.

What's going on here? EXIF says "flash manual" but it's not on the flash manual setting. It's on the "flash on setting" with 0 compensation, which previously never underexposed like this. I tried "green mode," and it does the same thing. Bug?

Also, just mounted my AF-360, same result.

The EXIF has masses of detail that we are missing in the images posted. The EXIF may give some information about what is going on. Could you pls post a straight-out-of-camera JPEG (not one put through Lightroom or Photoshop, with the bulk of the EXIF removed like the ones on display here) of a failed flash image.

Or post the text of the full EXIF extracted from a flash fail image (via the latest exiftool) as a text file attachment.

It may not provide all the answers, but most cameras collects buckets of data in the EXIF, so it is worth a close look. The K-3 in particular collects truck loads of data in the EXIF.

Sure, later today after work. I assumed the light room exports would maintain all the data. I guess I was wrong. I'd certainly like to fix this rather than go through the trouble of returning it, but I'm pretty sure this camera is just plain broken somehow. Figures I'd be the first on the forum to really have a problem after reading so many glowing reviews.

Other than the flash issue, everything else seems top notch, from image quality to improved auto-focus speed.

I do, sometimes. It's handy. Dial down the flash compensation -1 or -0.5, fire away, decent results.

It looks like the flash and the shutter aren't in sync. Try setting your AF 360 to full power manually and see if you get a partially illuminated frame from the tail of the flash. That would indicate a sync problem, although the flash may be firing just after the shutters close, instead of just prior to them opening, in which case the test wouldn't reveal anything.

LR strips out most of the EXIF, and even inserts a bunch of stuff of it's own. Sometimes it may even include your editing history.

LR strips out most of the EXIF, and even inserts a bunch of stuff of it's own. Sometimes it may even include your editing history. That option is not in the settings anymore. Now its much easier ... once you find it. Just press the flash on the d-pad and at the end the last two options is like Master and controller.

Sure, later today after work. I assumed the light room exports would maintain all the data. I guess I was wrong. I'd certainly like to fix this rather than go through the trouble of returning it, but I'm pretty sure this camera is just plain broken somehow. Figures I'd be the first on the forum to really have a problem after reading so many glowing reviews. Other than the flash issue, everything else seems top notch, from image quality to improved auto-focus speed.

Try setting your AF 360 to full power manually and see if you get a partially illuminated frame from the tail of the flash. That would indicate a sync problem, although the flash may be firing just after the shutters close, instead of just prior to them opening, in which case the test wouldn't reveal anything.
