Hoya K3 D-BG5 Grip

So as I continue to get used to the K3, I keep thinking that the K3 is so much like the K5, but improved.
The feel and enhancements should really have been called the K5 III.

No matter, now that we have the K50 and 500 it makes sense that the upper Pentax camera should have a different line ala the K30 makeover.

Low and behold, I just got my D-BG5 grip for my K3 and what do I see?

That's right folks - HOYA.

My head is swimming thinking over the "connect-the-dots".

Maybe Ricoh branding is not so efficient after all?

AWESOME!!!!

They probably had some extra pre-printed grip boxes in the inventory, just like the D-LI90 batteries.

Yeah, that's the only logical reason. Or else somebody forgot to print new ones.

I have been getting the impression that inventory control was not a Pentax strong point The battery delivered with my k-3 has a manufactured date of 2012.10. I suspect there were lots of things in the warehouse that got shoved out of sight. When you order 100,000 grip boxes instead of the 10,000 you were supposed to order what do you do? Hide them on the top shelf in the back, no one will ever know At least until the Ricoh management team starts going through all the paperwork............

LOL. Probably.

The green and AF buttons are reversed on the grips.

Also, the new grip is different besides the pin-outs and size of the mounting pins.
The new grip is less "swoopy" where your pinky would go, as to follow the contours of the K3.

There is also a slight raised portion on the bottom of the K3 grip.
This is actually a BIG deal in that before, if you mounted a camera plate to the bottom of the K5, the battery tray could get stuck.
With the raised portion that will not happen as there is now about a mm or so of clearance.
Nice!

There is a different treatment to the area around the power/shutter button.

There is a subtle reworking of most of the contours too.

The battery trays appear identical. So much so, that I was scared to mix them up because I would not be able to tell them apart.

Only the compressed gasket (from use) of the older tray and various use marks are distinguishing features.

Hoya knew that Ricoh would do a better job, so they sold them everything except the rights to build future battery grips.

Looking inside the battery compartment - there are 3 contacts for the Li battery on the BG4 and only 2 in the BG5.

I've got the HOYA version as well

In another thread I was explaining my retailer gave it for free when buying the K-3 at "le salon de la photo" in Paris.
They even said it was a gift from RICOH / PENTAX and a special offer for the salon.
Funny.

Lauren, the Hoya branded packages made it all the way to Oz, too. Mine looks identical to yours.

Wait wait wait... So the K-3 still is a product that already was in the Hoya pipeline?

No, the boxes actually were the thing that Hoya was waiting to release to the waiting public. They just hadn't finished the R and D on them completely when Ricoh took over.
