I keep flashing back to the idea that she has had a Canon for years, is happy with it and is used to the controls and layout. I love my Pentax but have been playing around with a variety of small, mirrorless cameras to supplement them when I need to go compact and light. Switching from Pentax to Sony NEX and then dumping the Sony in favor of the Olympus m4/3 line has made me very sensitive to control/layout changes. It gives me fits, and I am a pretty experienced photographer. I know Christmas presents are better if they are a surprise but in this case, it might be a good idea to discuss it with her. She may not want to make a radical change.

On the other hand, a K-30 or K-50 in a nice, bright color combo might appeal to her.

It's done. I appreciate everyone's input. The Pentax K-3 w/18-135mm Lens is on order from B&H.

Thanks,

Flip out screen... can be nice, I agree, especially for video. But ultimately I can live without, and it means a more compact and tougher body. I'm sure Pentax could make a flip out screen, but it would compromise on the weather sealing. Higher end Canons AFAIK also don't have flip out screens, do they?
Higher end Canons do not have flip out screens, but Olympus, Sony and Panasonic do, and they are weather sealed so we know it can be done. Anyway, all this is moot. The OP was determined to get a Pentax and he did. His wife should have years of great photos coming her way.

My Point is the T5i has the same sensor as the T2i from 2010, the same sensor as the 60D and 7D. Sure, the T5i has a flip out screen and others goodies for video shooters, but the same sensor so essentially the same camera as the T2i. Image quality will be exactly the same. So the 70D finally ships a new sensor with only slightly better lowlight performance, and 'Dual Pixel CMOS AF' geared toward better LIVE view focusing...again it's more about the videographer than the still shooter. Maybe the 7DmrkII will trump that, but I suspect it will get the 70d sensor, who knows.
Nah. In a previous post you stated that you were in charge and you wanted a Pentax so that's what your wife was going to get. There's no point in trying to justify your purchase because your mind is already made up. I really do hope it works out for you.

Ah she'll be happy, don't worry. After all she'll be going from Canon to Pentax, and not from Pentax to Canon. Usually Pentax is more logical, more intuitive than Canon, so learning how to shoot a Pentax will be a breeze.

You are welcome Mitch. Stay tuned.

Consider the Canon 85mm f1.8 for swimming. Fast and relatively affordable.

Unless you can get deckside, 200mm is only just usable for 25m pool shooting.
In a 50M pool which if the OP's daughters are serious will be where there out (or will be) then 300mm is an absolute Min and 500mm is more where its at.

You need a camera that can do 1600 clean and 3200/6400 are usable with work.
This is the k3 1st@3200 2nd@6400.

Here in the south, 50m pools are for Long Course ( summer ), Short course is the rest of the year, and is normally a 25 YARD pool. My girls swim year round, so they do both. Many of the long course venues here are outdoors so deck access is not an issue and 70-200mm works fine, you don't even need an expensive f/2.8 lens.

For indoors, often the deck is closed to all but swimmers and coaches, so unless we are lucky enough to get deck access, we generally don't bother to shoot the action, Many of these indoor venues seem to have lighting comparable to caves and you really need f/2.8, and longer lenses at 2.8 are cost prohibitive when you are shooting just for fun.
