Don't forget Ricoh Imaging makes money on cameras now. They would rather sell out at a profit and miss potential volume than overbuild and hold unsold inventory.

Secondly, what constitutes a "sale"? Is it a "sale" when Nikon ships the camera to its Distributor or Division, the Distributor or Division ships to a retailer or the retailer ships to an end user? Anecdotally Canon and Nikon are manufacturing more cameras than they are selling. They're experiencing an involuntary inventory build but reporting "sales" at the manufacturer level.

So what is the actual final market share? I guess we'll need to wait for CIPA numbers next February.

I can guess that the first stocks were quick empty , the second stocks will be left plenty . Because ,

1. the first stocks were grabbed by photographers , the second stocks won't be grabbed by videographers

2. after first stocks, people will know the truths, the BADs and the GOODs )

3. then videographers won't be much interested in K-3 .

it's joke ... but ,,. maybe )

Yeah but it was a joke.......Maybe.......

I read that three times and still don't understand it. So it is definitely a different perspective. I was thinking it was like a math word problem: "if the first stocks were grabbed by photographers, and the second stocks were not grabbed by videographers, then how many cameras were sold to women who are not photographers"

Here's how I see it. The K-50/K-500 is the camera to introduce people to the brand or bring them back cause they once used a film Pentax and have fond memories. Anyone in this market, if they do their research will find these cameras are head and shoulders above the competition.

The K-3 will be sold to upgraders/updaters who already own and love a Pentax.

A future FF will get the upgraders too, but it would also draw the odd pro from the dark side over to experiment.

It doesn't matter what your market share is, if you're selling everything you have to sell, at the price you are asking.
This...

Chasing market share has been the downfall of many good companies, there are other ways to measure success....however...market share PLUS profit margin equals Jackpot!! (See Apple)

Remember pentax market share is just 2%!

I actually hoping to see some report like this for the K-3:
“the pre-ordered quantities are almost 200% bigger than expected by Sony“
From source: Sony A7-A7r preorders 200% more than expected from Sony. Sony A7r review at CameraLabs. | sonyalpharumors

And that's for a camera with super slow AF and no IBIS. What's the point of a FF sensor if you can't get the shot?

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't it around 5%?
The figures were published in another thread on the forum. Basically, 90% of Pentax's sales are in Japan. The remainder is split evenly between Asia, Europe, and the Americas, each of which get a third of the rest of the pie. And that works out to about 2% in the US and possibly even wordwide (though I can't comment on that without looking at the numbers again).

The PDAF is really fast with the translucent mirror adapter
