Blacker skies are returning so it was time to get out the tracking mount. Comet Jacques is well-placed at my latitude in the constellation Camelopardalis the Giraffe so it was the first target. 23 frames totalling 7 minutes 8 seconds stacked in DeepSkyStacker 3.3.4 Taken with the DA*300 at f/4.5 - Jack

There are different types of astrophotography, but I highly recommend this book. The Deep-sky Imaging Primer: Charles Bracken: 9781481804912: Amazon.com: Books

Here's another book that's relatively new and pretty nice. I picked it up 2 months ago: Photography Night Sky: A Field Guide for Shooting After Dark

Clear skies and an almost new moon meant I also was out shooting the stars last night. Both of these single frame shots were with the K-3 and the DA*300, f/4.5, around 20 seconds. The comet was ISO6400 and the galaxy ISO3200. - Jack

Focussing

Any tips on achieving accurate focus - in my first attempt I thought that Live View would work, but the view was so noisy I couldn't see anything clearly.

In the absence of a B. mask, I have found with my K-3 and K5Iis that the best focus is obtained by targetting a 1st or 2nd magnitude star in Live View then magnifying 10x with focus peaking turned on. I was not much of a focus peaking believer for astro work until I started using it and found that it indeed does help find best focus. The better the seeing, the better will be your focus acquisition. One thing to remember is that every DA lens made focuses past infinity so you cannot just rack the lens out all the way and expect to acquire infinity. You will need to do the focus dance before every session with newer lenses. One reason I love doing wide field with my old Tak 135 is that it really does acquire infinity at the end of its focus travel.
