I just did a test. My K-3's viewfinder LCD automatically adjusts to the amount of light. So whereas before I had been looking at a dark area of my room, when I looked at a lampshade, the viewfinder LCD lit right up.

Hmm, that's interesting. I gather the viewfinder, itself, on the K-3 is brighter than that of the K-7. Could that account for the difference?

I wonder if that's also the reason for the OP's query, in that the K-3 viewfinder is noticeably brighter than those of the other cameras, so the data display appears dimmer. In any event, I can't say I've ever had any issues with reading the data display in the viewfinder of any Pentax DSLR that I've had.
