All nice sports shots. I wish I could learn to focus that well.

Sports Images with the K-3

I went to a football game last night and had forgotten how dark the stadium was.

Celebrating a TD.

Kicking the extra point.

Then tried and recovered an onside kick.

Looking to throw again.

Coming right at me as I stood behind the endzone.

A few more from the same game. Had plenty of chances to get shots of offensive action since the final score was 70-34.

Oh to be so close to my subjects! I have to work from the shoreline so a long zoom is pretty much mandatory. The image below was shot at 300mm's. Thankfully the K-3 resolution allows for tighter cropping. It's not as sharp as I'd like. (I'm starting my DA* 60-250mm fund but it'll be a while!) but it's still something I can work with and certainly more than I could do with my K200D.

The original

The crop

The closer the subject the less the crop needed and the sharper the image.

All 3 were shot with my DA-L 55-300mm at 300mm's.

First time with youth football. Camera did better than operator. Still learning to maximize the abilities of this thing. Never ran out of buffer, which was cool.

Impending Collision

I love the facial expressions in this one as the inevitable presents itself.
From the ball carriers "your goin' down big guy" to the watcher's "uh oh... this is gonna be ugly'

Not too bad. Extremely fast boats and the K3 and DA* 50-135mm did great. I just didn't have a long enough lens so I had to crop severely.

I hear you!!! Boat racing usually keeps you quite a way from your subjects. The ability to crop so tight with the K-3 helps a bunch doesn't it. Nice shot!!!

Back on the Sidelines

It turns out my retirement from sports photography was premature: my daughter made the UMD Club Lacrosse team. I went to her first game yesterday. I wasn't sure what to expect in terms of conditions so I took the Sigma 100-300/4. As it turns out, I was able to shoot from the sidelines but it was my first experience shooting outdoors under lights (and I'm not talking broadcast-quality lighting here.) Live & learn: next time, I'll take the 70-200/2.8 and shoot wide open. It was a good occasion to revive my fundamental sports photography philosophy, "Get good action and nobody will care if they can't count the players eyelashes."
