Thank you. I think what I may do for now is hold on to my GH2.

There is the Leica 45mm f2.8 with OIS that is micro 4/3 . Not as open as the f1.4/1.7 pancake lenses but at least has OIS.

Yes, first year.
That is why I think that someone with much more experience, can get very professional looking movies from the K3.
I did my best in color grading that movie e.g., but I am sure I could have gotten more out of it.
The thing is, all those very nice canon and GH movies on vimeo, they are mostly made by experienced people with good lighting setups and good postproduction.

See, this is where my problem lies with the GH series. this means a 90mm FF view if I'm correct...

Correct. Kind of a pain. Which is why I was looking at returning to Pentax and use some manual lenses I have. Easier to adapt and some great results with older primes. I have a 50mm f1.7 that I really like and was hoping K3 would be a great match as far as video. I got excited about the full manual control(finally!)

Ah ok

True, those great videos are done by pros who know what they are doing and have the equipment/crew/experience/preparation that's needed. Actually you can get professional looking video out of an old iPhone 4S... and the 5s will even let you shoot 4K video at 24p. You'll need a ton of light, but it can be done.

The beginning is shot on a 4S, then they show how they did it.

It does, it does. Wide angle is a bit hard. Then again, the K-3 turns the 1.5 crop into a 1.8-1.9 or so crop. mFT cameras give you a 2.0 crop, which is not that much worse, but you can get lenses that are MEANT for the crop (you can't with the Pentax). To get to 28mm you'd need a 14 or 15mm lens, which drives up costs (besides, such wide lenses are usually not very fast). Also, you can use C mount lenses which tend to be a bit wider since they were meant for a smaller sensor (though they may be meant for a too small sensor...).

Actually if you could also test if the camera will crop even when SR is deactivated that would be nice.

Switching from Live View stills to Video crops the image a couple degrees to either side and top and bottom (3:2 to 19:9 proportions). SR has no effect on amount of crop.

Turning SR on and off while in video mode has no effect on crop.
Ok... so... it will always crop.

I have to disagree on that mate.
I'm not going to guess, but it doesn't make that much of a difference and part of it is due to 16/9. vertically changes ofcourse the most. But looking at it horizontally, it hardly makes no difference.
For sure wideangle is still wideangle. But the crop is indeed always there.

Anyhow, i've put sthing on vimeo but have to wait ofcourse...

btw, 1st thing I noticed with the new firmware is that in videomode I could zoom in to check focus. Not sure if it was there before & i just hadn't seen it, but this was something I really liked in the canons & I thought the pentax not to have it. Maybe someone else can check this before doing the update. But it makes me happy anyhow.

Thank you so much for uploading that. Definitely jello at 24fps. What gets me is it seems to jello in a somewhat stationary position.

You said this doesn't really occur at 50fps?

That sample looks pretty good to me, anyone making a fuss about that oh-so-slight wobble shouldn't be wanting a dslr for video imho.
One thing, why a 640x480 resolution sample and why the wide black borders on all side?
I'd like to have seen the sample at full 1080p

that second clip of the plant is at 50p. take a very close look. I don't see jello compared to the first. But it is the only one I did at 50p...

well, I didn't want to take too much space of my vimeo account, so i kept it small...

to be honest, I was a bit surprised. especially outside. I was expecting a wobbling horror feast at 24p :-)
As Steve says, it's very slight wobble indeed. But you cannot go around and take a walk or make sudden movements. You have to stay in a position and make gentle movements. That panning shot outside went quite well that way.
But I really stick to some kind of shouldermount solution if you want to do handheld for longer and more shots. A dslr simply needs better support. That is why videocams look the way they look.
My 2 cents

Thank you again for your thoughts on this. Sorry if I seem anal about it but just frustrating when I want to support Pentax and they keep coming up short. I realize Pentax is first and foremost about photography, so video is not their greatest concern. I just think if they would have gone mechanical SR it would have sold me on it.

Someone also mentioned the Sony A77. Does anyone happen to know if Pentax lenses are compatible with this model?

Actually, I mentioned the sony A77. I have one. Bought it as there was no K3 yet and no other fitting model from pentax. Pentax lenses do not work on it unfortunately.
I bought the K3 more specifically for photography but I like its video as well

The sony is quite an impressive tool.

I just got a K-5 with 2 big Hot Pixels in dark areas
and three more - a little smaller ... Oh Pentax !
Will return that beast. No way to keep it with these faults !

Pansonic got two expensive glasses with F 2.8
that wide angle for around 700,- € - and that long one for ~ 1000,-

If you go to Canon ... you pay for Tamron 2.8 lenses
400,- € for the 17-50
and around 1800,- € for the 70-200

But Pansonic can be looked through with Olympus and others too...
But I am not good in those prices - because I am a cheap Pentax slave ...
up to now ;-)

I think the k-5 (and practically all Pentax cameras) have a pixel mapping function that gets rid of hot pixels. Would that help?

I do like the GH2 but its difficult to find a lens in the f1.4-2.0 range that includes OIS. Without the OIS the video is prettying damn shaky unless you invest in a steadicam gear. Lighting is an issue when using the kit lenses (f3.5) during darker video environments too.

True - that shake isn't tolerable - but the great sensor SR is only good in "unidirectional still-shots" ...
I love it too - but it is so nasty when panning that you wanna forget it. IS in the lense is far superior - and
allways was - and will ever be ... so forget abou your A 1.4 50mm when panning with Pentax - I am used
now to very conservative shooting - old style - but I can rarely do it from tripod . so I am gonna use that SR
but
just shoot unmovingly ... then Pentax K-7 and K-5 work great - only then.

K-3 I eagerly awaited for to come - I let it pass by - it is just a very good try and error - low bitrates that
Canon
and GH2 do surpass - and the movie SR is just a horror-freak-show. Forget it - Good SR is a must !
The K3 has some great features with the manual controls and headphone jack that I found exciting but so
far the feedback on video hasn't impressed me.
Just true ! But you have all of that in the GH2 - right ?
I tend to do more cinematic work that is handheld so a tripod isn't always the best option in certain conditions.
