Whoa - that was unexpected!!

Secret Santa delivered a K3 - VERY early. I haven't even pulled the tab on the lid yet. Still admiring that black and silver printing.

After dinner. Maybe. In my whole life I haven't been so ambivalent about opening a new camera box.

If Ricoh had a plan they've certainly made ME happy!!

Congrats! I've been slowly trying to get familiar with the changes from my K-5.
I am liking it more each time I pick it up.

I'm seeing some real-world DA20~40 Ltd. images that look awfully compelling - 15 and 70 on either end and anyone would be set!!

Coming from a K-01 (K10D) I'm sure I'll be delighted!

I'm always good - but maybe I wasn't naughty. I actually want her to wrap it and put it under the tree until next week.

NNNaaaahhhh.

K3 Unboxing Teaser

Just thought I would say - I opened the box and took the unboxing pictures last night and put the battery on the charger and put the K-01 battery in the K3 and Oh, My is it tiny!!! And Solid. And wonder of wonders the VF Diopter lets me shoot Right-Eye without glasses - that alone is worth all the RICOH paint they want to put on the LCD (which, BTW, is also tiny - the RICOH, not the LCD). I haven't been able to shoot Right-Eye in so long it feels unnatural. Wowsers!!

As is typical, I did the intial settings and set up the camera the way I want it without consulting the manual - the Pentax Menus are just so easy and logical. Just for grins I left the AF Point Selector on Auto (but I'll FIX THAT tonight) while I goofed around with the DA40. AF is "Wait - WHAT?? fast but a few times i was Wait - WHAT?? THERE??? shocked.

And it feels like a Pentax. Fits my right hand just perfectly and my left wraps around the snoot and lens like they were designed with me in mind.

But I had to go get my daughter at the airport since her plane was delayed at another airport about umpteen times until it finally got to where she was departing from so she could depart and eventually get into St. Louis, so I didn't have time to make The Post. Just didn't seem fair to say, "Hi kiddo. Gotta go play with a camera."

I think I will christen my K3 with images of our annual tree- and mantel-trimming party tonight in the company of Dry Sack (that's Sherry to the uninitiated), which seems an appropriate first-use of a new Santa present camera at Christmas time.

And did I mention the VF?? Oh. My. Heavens.

FWIW, I think I really enjoy stretching out the gratification period and not using up all the opening delights and discovery Wow! right away. I recommend you try it some time. Gives me something to look forward to every day.

Full Post tonight. More like an Epistle than a Post. Like a Christmas Story.

See ya there.

TFS your first impressions.
I am savoring the learning curve with mine too.
Just picked up a couple new Sandisk Extreme Pro cards to see how fast this baby can run.
Looking forward to your full report

I've had mine for over a month and I'm still not close to discovering all the new stuff. So much is just the same as k-5 and then "Huh?? that's different".

Yep. The K3 is basically a K5 Mark III.

I may be picking up a third one soon.
Won't it be funny to have a picture with another K3 with the Ricoh blanked out!

LOL.. I have automated tools to edit the exif data, if I wanted to.
I have "zero" problems with having Ricoh inside the camera, as they own Pentax.
I have "zero" problems with having Ricoh on the bottom of the camera.

Having Ricoh on the outside is the problem, where I see it every time I take a picture is the problem.

I'm 52 and have never actually shot with a "Pentax" as Asahi was on both ME Super's, both LX's and Hoya on both K-5's

You *did*, as the team of Japanese engineers who created the era of the "M" cameras and their ethos has continued up until present day.

A Pentax is very unique in how it looks and feels and how it operates.

Those same Pentax engineers made sure there was compatibility, and that things worked with everything that was made by them.
In the Pentax world, everything is very much part of the system.

You can only maintain a "brand" if you maintain an ethos that is bound by something - as in "Pentax".

Ricoh may have some heritage in their cameras or whatever they *do*, but Ricoh engineers are not Pentax engineers.

Again, in a few years when the Hoya pipeline is exhausted, we will see what the fruit of Ricoh and Pentax engineers produce, but the K3 is not that camera.
