K3 Catch in Focus Surprise

So yesterday I discovered that indeed the K3 can do CIF. I had read that the K3 CIF did not work. Today I set the camera up expecting to capture blue jays and this is the visitor that I had; magpie. Normally magpie's can't get at the peanut feeder as they are too big but this one was successful. Taken in TaV mode with DA* 300 at ISO 640, f8 and 1/640 sec.

I had read that the K3 CIF did not work.

I was actually assuming the opposite: that the K3 continues having Catch-in-focus, the same as previous models.
Surprise to you ... expectation for me !
Good shot of the magpie.

Cheers!

I had read in a few forum posts that the CIF did not work.

I think there's something wrong with your camera and/or technique. The magpies I know look like this:

The OP's photo is accurate. BXF, your image is what happens when you take a photo of a magpie using something other than a K-3!

I don't think so, are you not able to do the same as in k-5/IIs if you set it to AF1?

I didn't realize that posting a link to a thread discussing cif on a thread discussing cif constituted spam. Its not my fault that users are confused because Ricoh hobbled the functionality of catch in focus. I only commented because someone claimed it did not work and I discovered why. Aggressive moderation much?

It works on af1 but not af2. On the k5 both worked.

The person that posted the comment to which you are referring is not a moderator; but I am.
You've now posted your link to your rant on RIAC Community in two threads here. Please check your PMs before posting further on the subject.

I just checked on my k-5IIs, there are two settings..
-AF (enable or disable)
-Half-press shutter (AF or Off)

So, in k-3,
AF1- means AF enabled and Half-press shutter AF
AF2- means AF enabled and Half-press shutter Off

CIF works on AF1 and not AF2
same for k-5IIs (does not work if AF enabled and Half-press shutter Off)
(note: I have not tried my k-5 yet)...

AF2 works by design if you use MF lenses and using the PDAF system; press AF button while turning the focus ring until green hexagon appears then recompose slightly, hit the shutter.
