First K-3 Photo Outing

I finally edited all my photos from my first real outing with my K-3. Here are a few highlights:

1

2

3

4

5

6

7

8

9

These are from the Blackhawk Auto Museum here in the San Francisco Bay Area. It's my favorite auto museum (of the ones I've visited.) The collection is stunning and it's pretty well maintained.

My goal was to capture the cars in ways that captured the cars' personality or said something about the car. Even if the whole car isn't pictured, my hope is that the photo gives the viewer and idea of what it is like to stand near that car.

My K-3 was complemented by my 31mm FA Limited, 77mm FA Limited, and 50mm SMC-M 1:1.4. C&C, of course, are welcome.

I can understand the look you are trying to achieve, but all of these are much too dark - at least on my monitor.

A few more areas of light would highlight some of the features of these vehicles, features that are no doubt attractive and interesting, but are just hard to see.

Great stuff.
Its very subjective and personally I like the darker look in these - mostly from the surrounding negative space.

I think the dark look works well. It focuses my attention on the parts that are visible and makes me long to see what's hidden. I like pictures that trigger my curiosity and leave some of the story untold.

For me no. 1, 3, 5, and 7 works best. I find 2, 4, and 8 to maybe have a bit too many bright spots wanting my attention without the spots adding a lot.

Well done, I'd say!

The dark look is different, but I like it. It gives the sense of the cars emerging from some unknown depths; a secret glimpse revealed. This is obviously artistic and not a snapshot. Snapshots are easy and risk-free. These images have personality and create an emotion. And the K3 looks like it gave you what you wanted. Well-done, I'd say!

I think these are terrific - I like the mystery I feel with subjects just emerging from the "unknown."

I'm a car guy and shoot lots of car photos over the course of the year. I may shamelessly utilize your approach here if the opportunity presents itself and you don't object.

Enjoy that new camera.

We have one here in Sacramento along with a train museum. If you decide to visit, let me know and I'll let you use my 1.2.

Did you use flash or any other light modifiers?

I like them all quite a bit, especially 3 - the red is nice and rich.

In 7 and especially 9 I find the purple fringing a bit distracting from the nearly-monochromatic theme, though. Not the 77's strong suit, for sure.

Original Poster
ISO: mix of 100 to 800
Flash: not allowed, I don't think, so I used available light only
#7 is an Alfa, yes. They whole collection is amazing. I think the three Bats are Alfas, if I remember correctly.

Great photos

Live near the museum, but never been there. Really like your use of light to emphasize car features, even gives sense of mystery and motion. Found your post because I got k3 as Christmas gift and looking for pentax meet ups to help translate all the new features, but alas nothing in east bay, or anywhere else in Bay Area for that matter? Let me know if you do another local shoot and don't mind someone tagging along? Even to the museum as it looks interesting?
