K-3 review - PhotoReview.com.au

An Editor's Choice review of the K-3 today from PhotoReview.com.au (just click on the link in civiletti's post, directly below) with some interesting and impressive figures for JPG and especially DNG RAW line width per picture height, with and without the selectable AA filter, plus a whole lot more!

RAW resolution remains considerably below that of the Nikon D800, suggesting there is value in FF for critical work, with or without AA filter. The D-800 was tested with Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G, which, I conjecture, has resolution in the same league as Pentax's 50/1.8. If someone knows different, please comment.

Which is not to say that the K-3 is not a fine camera. It is.

They tested the K-3 with 50/1.8, the K-5II with 18-135 and the K-5 with 18-55, so direct comparisons of resolution are not possible. Too bad.

Though I wonder how much of that is due to the lenses that were used, since the PR review states that "This is no mean feat for a camera with a 24-megapixel sensor and indicates excellent performance from the 50mm lens. Both file formats showed the lens suffered from edge and corner softening, particularly at wide apertures. However, resolution remained relatively high." Note that PR did post a separate review of the DA 50mm f/1.8 that was used for the K-3 review.

Nice little review, although (as usual) their test images look very boring, and are too small to really be very informative. And since the received view around here is that it is a Sony sensor, they are likely wrong when they say:

QuoteQuote:
The sensor in the K-3 appears to be the same 24.71-megapixel Toshiba chip as used in the D7100 (and D5200).
Even though there are difficulties involved in making comparisons with other camera body/lens combinations, the resolution chart is very interesting - K-3 RAW resolution is great and exceeds the Nikon D7100 and 5200, even the D600, and sits in D800 territory sometimes. Plus it barely seems to degrade as ISO increases.

Also to be noted is the big gap in K-3 resolution between the JPEG results (in the 'Natural' JPEG image tone they used) and the RAW output. This is hardly surprising, I guess, as Photo Rreview note that for the K-3 the 'Natural' image tone produces images with "slightly reduced saturation and contrast", and from the K-5IIs test (also shot in 'Natural' image tone), they also note "The default level of sharpening appeared low (a judgment backed by our Imatest tests)".
