Mirror lock up

I would like information about the K3's Mirror Up (MUP) shooting mode.

I understand the operation and benefit of mirror lockup.

However, can someone describe how the MUP shooting mode would be used in preference to the 2 second (or 3 second remote) delay mode?

Coming from a K10D, this is one aspect of the K3 I haven't quite understood.

One advantage of mirror lock up is that you can lock up the mirror in advance, so you don't have to wait for 2 sec for the shot to be captured.
But it will require a cable release or remote.

Most obvious thing to me is when you are unsure of when you want to activate the shutter and can't have the delay. For example waiting for fireworks.

I use MLU during astrophotography sessions when I need to ensure that all vibrations have damped down before opening the shutter. This may or may not be longer than 3 seconds depending on in situ conditions. In this case, I use the shutter setting where first press locks up the mirror, 2nd press opens the shutter and 3rd press closes it.

Jack, what settings do you use for this?

Cheers, Paul

Hi, Paul. Here are my settings for astro work:

1) In shutter settings (up arrow on 4-way controller), I set it to MUP + IR controller.

2) In C-1, option 7, I set Bulb Mode options to Mode 2.

Note that mirror and shutter are on separate drive assemblies in the K-3 so the first press of the IR release will lock up the mirror using these settings.
