What drive mode are you in? Remote or similar greys it out.

The mode dial needs to be on M to properly meter, but the drive mode is the shutter's setting (ie single shot, self timer, mirror lock...) The drive mode needs to be on anything but self timer or mirror lock. Check this by pressing "up" on the Dpad.

drive mode is continuous shooting high. (I always use back button auto focusing + continuous with all my cameras)

and changing it to single mode doesn't change anything.

I'm stumped!

That is the program/shooting modes. Drive mode is the different types of shooting (eg Hi-speed, mirror lockup, remote etc).

Do you have "Using Aperture Ring" set as permitted in your settings?

oh it shoots very well! Exposures are spot on. I'm impressed at how good it is.

The only issue is that the SR doesn't work (as stated, both SR and set focal length settings are greyed out in the menus), which was a primary reason I purchased a camera system with vibration control in the body: i.e. to work with legacy lenses.

Did they change things between K-5 and K-3 ??

So you could shoot with the adapted lens despite having Aperture ring permitted set to off?

yes. I was impressed that the exposures were spot on in various lighting.

Note that I'm used to Nikon's way of doing things.
But the way Pentax integrates with legacy glass kinda makes sense now.
Clearly they have done some clever engineering to make it seamlessly (although the "Use Aperture Ring: Yes | No" takes some pondering to understand all the implications).

The one item that I wish Pentax would change on their default setup is to have "use aperture ring" enabled. It makes no difference when using any of the auto aperture lenses, and you only set it once when you get a new body. But, it creates problems such as this when its not set.

I'm not really sure why you would ever need to toggle this option off.

Agreed. Why is it even an option? It should just be enabled and left that way. I know no reason to turn it off.
