Focus peaking during video?

So we all wish the K-3 could do focus peaking while shooting video and we all know that it doesn't.

Except that it does, at least just this one time

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ugvxst3nh7spf0p/PK3_2941.MOV

Not only that but it actually recorded the bright fringes. I noticed the focus peaking (or whatever was actually happening) and assumed that I had not actually pressed the shutter to start recording, so I pressed the shutter button but that of course stopped the recording.

Any idea what could be going on here? While shooting it looked to me like focus peaking because of the white fringes. I wan't seeing very well because my glasses were drenched with the salt spray so it just appeared to be so at the time but looking at the video in a more relaxed environment I'm not quite sure what those fringes are.

edit: I just noticed that watching it in the browser from the link above doesn't quite show the effect, probably because of additional compression or something. You'll need to download the video (the download button on that same page) to see the original unaltered video copied straight from the SD card.

Very strange. Could it just be that you have accidentally set the video quality to some very low setting? (I have never tried low quality settings on my k-5, so I don't know if it could cause something like this)

It is HD 30p. I shot some other videos shortly before and after without ever changing any settings. Now that I check again there is actually one other one that has this same effect but all the other ones don't.

I'm just now checking the settings, which I haven;t changed since shooting that video:

Exposure seting: P
Memory card: 2
Movie capture settings HD 30p
Rec level: auto
Digital filter: off
HDR capture: HDR off
Movie SR: on

focus peaking often is implemented as just a really extreme case of over sharpening -- could you have selected some sort of super sharpening setting? (just thinking out loud here)

Developer: "I thought we said focus peaking."

System Test: "Yes, but we aren't supposed to record it!"

Product Manager: "Too late now. Suppress the feature so nobody will find it."

Systems Analyst: "Use a secret sequence as a backdoor, that nobody could possibly find by accident."

Definitely looks like focus peaking to me.
You found an unlock-video-FP hack/bug!

Me Too

I also have a 15 second video shot at full HD 30p that shows the same effect as yours. It was the third of four short segments I made of my son playing sport. All four segments were shot one after other, with no more that thirty seconds between them. Only the third one shows the effect and no settings were changed. I knew that there was a problem but I didn't recognize that it was focus peaking until I saw your post. How weird that it not only shows focus peaking, but actually records it. I think I will do some experimenting on the weekend.

Maybe focus peaking during video will be added in a future firmware upgrade.

I really hope so, because auto focus searching during video is nasty

I have experienced the same thing, intermittently as others have.

I know this is a zombie thread, but wanted to give some exposure to a post I made on this subject in the video forum on this topic:

I had the same issue once with my K-3. I guess there can only be one video stream in the K-3, and because of a bug, the LiveView stream doesn't switch to the recording stream (or options, if you prefer) in some particular situation that I can't reproduce. Maybe it has been fixed in the 1.21 FW update btw?
