Gotta say, K3 looks like a killer choice.
Getting the hang of it.

Just thought I would post a couple of photos at iso 6400 with K5 and K3. They aren't perfect, probably, but I think they give decent comparison of the two with noise reduction turned off as much as you can in Lightroom.

K5:

K3:

I apologize ahead of time for any differences in focus, framing, or other things that may make it difficult to compare these photos. The K3 crop is a little tighter than the K5 crop, as well, for what it is worth. Hopefully it gives an idea of the two cameras performance comparatively at iso 6400...

Thanks for posting the images. Depending on where I look, I can make a case of either being "better" which probably means there isn't much difference. As important, though, the K-3 appears to have more accurate color (yellow in this case). Or do my eyes deceive me?

Yeah in those two shots, the k-3's yellow is fuller/better. But noise looks comparatively the same.

I also see the K-3 image with brighter colors, the K-5 image colors have a muddy appearance.

K-3 much sharper. I'd rather have sharpness any day rather than noise.

That's too much noise for that kind of camera, it's a no way

I said this before I got a K-3. Wasn't impressed with DR and high ISO noise going backwards.

But it's not that bad to be honest. You can deal with it just using Lightroom 5.3. Better still is Topaz DeNoise in Photoshop CS6. The trick is not to pixel peep. It's a very fine grain that makes pictures pop.

I would like Pentax to bring out a full frame or even an APS-C that uses a sensor different to a Bayer to give very low noise at very high ISO and also resolve detail in reds much better. The red detail thing for me is much more of a problem than noise. It is actually quite hopeless when it comes to reds. Roses look like red pom-poms at an American football game.

Out of camera JPEGs, right? On my monitor the K5 has better WB than the K3. Look at the rocks. They are grey. The K3 has a hint of yellow in them as well as the greens being warmer too.

People who shoot sports and need the buffer shoot jpegs.

Regardless, from the two ISO 6400 shots above, at 100% crop - the noise looks similar. When scaled to the same resolution (i.e 1st pic vs 3rd pic), I prefer the shadow noise in the k-3 shot. And given that all other crop cameras either has similar sensors to the k-3/k-5 (Nikon) or worse (Canon) - I'm not sure where one would find a better high-ISO crop camera.

Perhaps you should have a good chat with Ron Hendricks, who used the k-5 for a lot of professional sports pictures, and has only better things to say about the k-3 in that regards.

So if you were a professional sports photographer you'd recommend a Pentax?

Really?

These cameras (I have the K-5, K-5IIs and K-3) are very good for what they're mean't for, but they're no good for professional sports shooting. A few keepers perhaps, but I wouldn't recommend relying on any of them to make a living.
