My K3 has just come back from Pentax (JP Service Solutions - presumably Johnsons Photopia) with a note saying

Checked function - unable to recreate fault - updated firmware.

The firmware was however already the latest (1.03) when I sent it in.
That is quite disconcerting…. and annoying.
It's up to you of course, but if I were you I'd give them a call, tell them you had already updated the firmware before sending it in, and point them to your thread here and the one I started with all the reports of the issue. From what I was told Japan is working on the issue, but it certainly doesn't sound like the repair center you dealt with is aware of that fact.

JP is the standard Pentax repair shop for the UK. If they say there is no problem then there is nothing I can do other than to collect evidence, in the form of a video showing the problem.

But also if there is no fix then it cannot be fixed, obviously. Pentax will presumably eventually develop a fix and hopefully within the 12 month UK warranty. If they are cynical then they will wait till the warranty on all affected cameras has expired.

I pointed them at this thread and the other one and the man I spoke to at Pentax UK denied he had ever heard of this problem.

Where did you buy your camera in the UK to get only 12months warranty ??

UK standard Pentax warranty is 24 months.!

I agree with Amy the responce of JP is not satifactory (though understandable)

You need to speak to them , I have dealt with them in the past and found once you get out of the treadmill they are responsive and efficient.

JP are also the approved repairers for most other dslr manacturers in the UK and know what their doing , But given the number of repairs they have a rote system of diagnostic and you camera if sent in without prior warning would pass those tests.

The updated firmware is sloppy though and you shoudl point that out to them .

If they cannot resolve your issue they will escalate to Pentax UK .

Mind you as you cannot re-produce the issue using 'Penatx' batteries its difficult to see how Pentax or JP can do anything to help.

Maybe you need to speak to your 3rd party battery manafacturer ?

It was bought from Park Cameras, Burgess Hill. If the warranty is 24 months that is great - I did not realise that!

I wonder if it was 24 months on the K5 too. I don't think it was because I paid some £150 to have it repaired, within 2 years.

Of course, if the issue cannot be reproduced using Pentax batteries then Pentax are under no obligation to fix anything. So I need to keep an eye on this. If it happens with a Pentax battery I will get a video.

The guy I spoke to was told exactly what the issue was, and I got some paperwork mentioning it. So they know about it allright.

A video of it happening is a good idea, but there are at least several on YouTube already (including mine). There's at least a few videos in the reporting thread.

I've said this before... but if Pentax cannot reproduce the issue, they aren't trying hard enough. I was able to reproduce it regularly, even though it meant putting a lot of shutter actuations on the camera. They also had the opportunity to get their hands on both of my K3 bodies, both of which had the fault.... however, they didn't request I, or the store I bought them from, send them either of those K3s. If you haven't read my whole story, I was in constant touch with Pentax USA for about 5 months because of this issue.

If they aren't aware of it at this point, there is some really bad communication going on... and that alone doesn't inspire much confidence.

I thought you said Penatx US were not interested in having your camera returned ?

So why were they in contact with you..... Who was you contact ?

I'm interested as it seem Penatx US have treated you very badly and if they were in personaly contact with you I'm not sure how that happend.

I never said they treated me badly. Never.
To quote myself from above "They also had the opportunity to get their hands on both of my K3 bodies, both of which had the fault.... however, they didn't request I, or the store I bought them from, send them either of those K3s."
So yes, as I said, they were not interested in getting either of my K3 bodies returned to them to look at themselves.

I've told my story several times. A little searching will give you all the gory details. As far as who I was in touch with from Pentax, both a local district sales rep for my area, who then put me in touch with a product tech/specialist at Pentax USA. I emailed and/or talked with them by phone fairly often between October and now.

According to my notes I have two names of people I spoke to. One was called Freek at Pentax UK 08707368299 and the other Clint at Johnsons Photopia Ltd 01782753357.

Neither recognised the problem.

The servicing is done by JP and Pentax UK doesn't even see the camera.

Nikon have problems too - just different ones. I would not touch a Nikon with a 20ft bargepole, after my "customer service experiences" with Nikon UK. Absolutely unhelpful, arrogant and rude. I know several professional photographers who say the same ("customer service... what customer service?") and they are always sending stuff back for repair, but they add that Nikon kit has the features they need for their work. One of them showed me how he could set up a camera with a number of flashguns and the whole setup would work out the flash power needed, with the flashes talking to each other using short flashes to carry data. This was a few years ago and probably everybody has this now, but at the time it was unique. My last Nikon camera broke 3 times. I see my pro friends are generally moving to Canon pro gear. I normally use Canon stuff; it isn't state of the art in terms of latest features but seems to just work. Pentax give you a lot of bang for the buck in the DSLR market but seem to have issues with every new camera when it comes out, so it pays to wait maybe 6 months.
