L-Bracket for K-3

Several older threads here and at dpreview bemoaned the lack of a custom L-bracket for the K-3. I visited the Really Right Stuff website today and found this:

BK3-L: L-plate for K-3

This is for K-3 without grip. It's in pre-order stage with no mention of when it might be available.

I've never used an L-bracket, but I'm doing a lot more tripod work now and I can see how much more convenient one would be. Thinking really seriously about pre-ordering.

Thank you for this info, and also thanks to some higher power that I waited looking for other supplier of Arca-Swiss Q plate system (if there is for Pentax)

(Initially it was said that they was not planning for an L-plate for K3, and I was a little bit annoyed by this, as I started up with RRS to my K10. Now they still will have me as an customer!)

This is great! I sure wish they'd make one for the grip, too, but certainly better than no bracket at all...

The one for the K-3 with grip will only come in "Limited Silver."
(If not, we have another job for dcshooter!)

BTW, the biggest misunderstanding for these plate manufacturers was that the K-5/II/IIs body is different from the K-3, so their existing designs would not work well (or at all). That, and the realization that there are enough people with K-3s willing to spend the $$$ for a RRS L-bracket for them.

I emailed RRS and here's what they had to say about availability:

I don't have any exact dates to offer, but based on the usual timing for production of a new plate, I'd expect to see those within the next 2-3 weeks at the most.

Mestos may be making one for the K-3 with the grip. I received a response from "Mad For Camera" that one is coming soon, but it was unclear whether it was an L-Plate or a regular plate.

I ordered the RRS K-3 L Plate and it arrived today. Fits the K-3 perfectly without blocking access to anything. Typical high-quality RRS engineering (and high price).

And Mestos has a plate for the K-3 w/ grip available now, on "MadForCamera" of course!

Gordo, you'll note that the Mestos version is slightly more expensive than the RRS for non-grip, and about $30 less than the typical RRS price for a gripped L-plate. I've been using the Mestos PD-K5 on my K-3 and it's a bit wiggly (not a perfect fit, since it was designed for the K-5) and it isn't an L. Might be ordering that RRS plate...

Wish I hadn't seen this thread - it's going to cost me some money. When RRS said they weren't going to make one, I bought a generic one from Acratech. It works but there's a couple of things I'm not crazy about it. I can still use the generic one on the K100, which I tend to only use with an R72 filter, so it will still have a home here. But I'd much prefer the RRS dedicated one. So thanks for posting this!

fwiw, if you can find one, the Kirk L-bracket for the K7 (BL-K7) fits the K3 just fine. (A little difficult to get the HDMI cover off, but that's a minor inconvenience at most.)

Kirk doesn't even show L-brackets for any Pentax on its site?!

Just got mine and I really like it - it's the usual RRS high quality product. It has a different design than the one for the K5, it fits closer than the K5's dedicated L-bracket and still clears the HDMI cover. I also like the fact that it has a slot where I can attach an OpTech strap, so I can use my sling strap, something I couldn't do easily with the Acratech's generic L-bracket. I tended to just leave the K5's bracket on the camera most of the time, and I think I'll do the same with the K3.

Thanks very much for posting this, I'm delighted!
