K3: Elk with an Attitude

I captured an interesting expression on an elk last weekend at Jasper National Park in Alberta. There were so many it was like a cattle ranch. This was shot with the K3 and Tamron 70-200 f2.8.

Sorry it was with the K5IIs; I load the 2 cams with different lenses and lose track.

Dale, I think that the tones in that image looks too similar in their mid-greyishness. This is probably an evolutionary adaptation to help the elk blend into its surroundings, but it doesn't help when you're trying to share an interesting image. I think the image can be improved by raising the Black Point to darken it, increasing the Contrast just a little and adding some Local Contrast Enhancement to make the elk stand out more from the background. There's only a limited amount of changing that can be done from a screen-grab of a JPEG, but I've made the mentioned changes in PaintShop Pro and also lightly used the Topaz Labs Detail 2 plug-in to make the fur a bit sharper looking.

While the noise in the ISO2500 shot is now more obvious, do you prefer this version?

Dan.

Yes tweaking the contrast can help; thanks for sharing.
