Built-in flash "not available" with DA 10-17 etc., can someone confirm?

I was browsing the K-3 PDF manual the other night and I noticed something disturbing on page 84.

There's a table stating that "The built-in flash is not available due to vignetting" for the following lenses:
  • DA fish-eye 10-17mm
  • DA 12-24mm
  • DA 14mm
... and some telephoto lenses.

What does this mean? Does it mean the flash won't fire?

I don't have a K-3 so I can't investigate the issue myself. I have a K-5 and a 10-17 and I've taken many fun fill flash snapshots with that combination. Yes there's some vignetting but you can often compose your way around that. I'd hate to lose that possibility with the K-3.

Can someone with a K-3 and one of the lenses mentioned try it out for me, perhaps?

Thanks in advance,
--Anders.

The flash will fire, just that the spread of the flash won't cover the whole image area of those wide lenses. Further, there might be a shadow from the hood.

Nothing is restricted. (Even tested on my K-3 with the DA 10-17mm!)

Hi Anders, it can also mean is the lens will cast a shadow on the bottom of the image when the flash is fired. Lens hoods make it worse, and going wide angle. No real problem when you zoom in, I suggest you take some test shots to determine what focal lengths cause the problem and avoid them. Same thing on any DSLR, used to happen on my K20 and K5 as well.

Flash will fire with the 10-17, no problems there. I read the same lines and was puzzled but when I tried it, it worked. Do not have the other lenses in your post but it fires with all my lenses, wide and long.

Here is a shot with the K3 and DA10-17 from last weekend. Some light falloff around the edges but it does OK....

This is great news. It seems to work like I'm used to with the K-5.

Thanks everyone.

The same thing happens with the DA 16-45 at the widest angles, the popup flash cast a shadow. You can easily address the problem with lightroom by making and exposure adjustment brush.
