I need help in processing a K-3 RAW file.

Here is a link to the original file : https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8INe0_VKyQ8QnF1VFcwNlRzd28/edit?usp=sharing

Pentax K-3, DA* 60-250, 250 mm, F 6,3, 1/1250, ISO 200.

Here is what I managed to do with it thus far in DxO :

The scene still looks rather bleak. I do understand that this is 250 mm, there is a haze above the water and so on, but I am more than sure, that it is possible to process it better than I did. The original RAW files seems to be heavily underexposed.

It would be nice to see, how other users would process this image. Thanks in advance !

Set your white and black points and the haze will dissapear. There is no underexposure when looking in ACR 8.5.

This is my take on it. I don't know what the ocean looks like in your part of the world, but it looks rather natural to me, so I've made some adjustments.

Here's my 3 mins worth. Workflow Adobe DNG converter, Photoshop camera raw, Topaz clarity. There is a lot of noise on the image which could be got rid of easily with another 15 mins and a pass through Topaz DeNoise

Maybe a bit dark, but done for more cloud emphasis.

Hi
You didn't think you would get this many takers, did you. But I guess there are a lot of people, including myself, who cannot resist a challenge.

From your description I expected a dull image but after downloading the original and opening it in PS I must say it is not half as bad as you make it out to be. Nevertheless there are a number of things that can be done to improve the shot. Me thinks.

The main problem is a slight blue cast. (At least that is the way it come across my screen) This I thought makes the clouds, the sky and the water look strangely blue. Also the white superstructure of the ship does not look white. (I assume it was) After correcting this the image started to look very quickly more acceptable. (even if I say so myself) Next I used Nik Viveza to make the clouds a bit brighter and increased the contrast to make them more defined and lastly I brightened the whole image by a few bars. That's all I did and I think it is all that is required in my opinion.

I can also see that there is a fair bit of heat shimmer in the air but neither can nor would you want to correct this.

Greetings

Thank you, people, for your suggestions ! All of the contributions look great, but I prefer the more "neutral" looking version by Schraubstock and cgchang. When I was shooting this image the sun was right behind my back. Heat shimmer in this case is mostly because the water is too cold right now as opposed to the air. I guess the position of the sun and this slight mist are to blame for a dull-looking (in my opinion) image.
DxO renders it completely different compared to Camera Raw. I have to admit, that I forgot that I had that piece of software on my PC The idea of using graduated filters is very nice. SilkyPix renders it again in a completely different fashion and I dare say, worse, with a violet cast.
It seems that with K-3 the telephoto lenses are far more dependant on the position of the sun and atmospheric conditions.

also done with DxO -- minor adjustments to selective tone and saturation.

and yes, there is a LOT of atmospheric disturbance going on in this photo.
