Every cheaper solution you'll come up with that doesn't satisfy, will eventually cost the same as the correct expensive version as many have learned have buying tripods.

What has been needed for decades is a simple industry standard that works for all camera, lens collars and accessories. It would simply address the point of interface between the tripod or tripod adapter plate and the item mounted on it. Anything below that point could be brand specific. It need only be two or more dimples in the camera bottom and two or more protrusions on the tripod or adapter surface. At least two because two is one and one is none.

Another thought would be mating grooves. That would be even stronger.
