It told me that it was complete and then directly turned off.

Updating Firmware

QuoteOriginally posted by Say Cheese Quote
What an ordeal!! Last night, I spent a couple of hours trying to do my first firmware update from 1.00 to 1.11 on my K-3. Nothing but problems as I could not get my Macbook Pro to recognize the SD Card.

I got the SD card sorted this morning and followed the instructions for the actual update. Everything was going as explained up to the "NOW LOADING" part. Suddenly the camera just turned off. I waited and waited, thinking it may need to re-boot and complete the installation. Nothing... My heart sank with fears of a bricked camera. I waited some more and still nothing... No "COMPLETE"

I turned the camera to OFF and removed the SD card. Turned the camera to ON and thankfully it did turn on. I checked the firmware version and sure enough it says 1.11
Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this?

Time to go take some pictures check that it's all working as it should.
If you watch the update process (takes about 90 secs), you will see the screen say "Complete" for about 2-3 seconds and then go blank. On older models, the "Complete" would remain displayed on the screen until you turned the camera off. Sort of a step backward the way it works on the K-3.

I'm trying to update from 1.10 to 1.11. I'm doing everything exactly the same as previous upgrades, i.e. copy to root of card, turn on with menu button held down but it just goes to the standard screen, not the firmware screen. I've tried it with different cards, newly formatted cards, different downloads, etc.

Anyone have any ideas?

There is probably something wrong with the filename. Make sure it is called fwdc220b.bin

The card is in slot 1?

There is a thread about the firmware update 1.10 I think or older, where all kinds of problems is reported and solved.

Since I never have had any serious problems with the updating process I only remembered reading about someone having had an old update on the computer and the computer added something to the filename when unpacking the new update.

Sorry but i'm out of ideas.

I have only seen it twice on the K-3 but then I have not been staring at it...

If you unzipped the file in the same directory that you did the 1.10 update your computer will append a numeral to the filename (something like fwdc220b_1.bin). Be sure your unzip directory doesn't still have the old file resident.

Fixed!

Thank you monochrome. I perhaps should have said that I'm on a Mac. It didn't have that extra numeral, but, based on your advice, I trashed every k3 file I could find, redownloaded, went through the usual procedure and it's in!

Thanks again.

You don't have to trash the previous updates if you don't want to (some here like to keep them). All you have to do is alter the file name of the older updates by adding something like -old or the -month, whatever, to the file name. The latest update will then download and extract to that directory without the file name being altered with a "-2".

is the absence of word that it hasn't indicative of anything?

The absence of word is certainly not a bad thing. I recall "it hasn't fixed it" posts within a few days of previous updates...
