Pentax, PLEASE add a Wide JPEG setting

I would REALLY like for Image Capture Settings to offer a Wide JPEG selection.

I'm used to photos being 1.77777:1 rather than 1.5:1 (which looks 'wrong' to me)

My previous camera gave 4608/2592 = 1.77777...

The K-3 on L size gives 6016/4000 = 1.504

For the same 'aspect ratio' of 1.77777:1, it would need to be 6016/3384

I understand the viewfinder will show 'out of frame' sections at the top and bottom, but I'm still saving the full-size RAW pictures as well, so not a problem if I need to crop the occasional photo differently later in Lightroom.

Pentax: *Please* could you add the Wide JPEG setting in a future firmware release?

Thanks.

I think the K-01 allows this because it is always in live view. The DSLRs don't allow this, because (as you stated) the photographer wouldn't know where the crop would be. Did you try live view settings or in-camera development of raw files? Maybe you can find an option there
If you shoot raw, you can have your raw software do automatic adjustment, including cropping photos.

But 1.5:1 (or rather 3:2 as its usually called) is classic photography aspect ratio. Pretty much all DSLRs have a sensor of this size and I don't know how many allow cropping. Mirrorless and P&S cameras are another story, though. And I had to think a little bit to figure out 1.7777:1 actually refers to 16:9, which is usually an HD movie format

I use the in-camera crop a lot for 1:1,16:9 4:3 or to crop and rotate. Just push the down 'arrow' in playback and choose crop... works nicely on the Pentax bodies I own.

Thanks for the suggestions

Live mode only appears so have shift and rotate options (it would be a battery hog using live mode all the time anyway?)

The playback down-button crop does work well, but apparently only on one file at a time(?), plus it creates new files for the cropped pictures.

This is my first SLR (previously used two Panasonic pocket cameras and a Nikon bridge camera, all set to output 16:9), and I'm still learning. But what I dislike about 3:2 on a 16:9 monitor is that the picture is small on screen during the first look through the pictures.

What I wanted to do (to avoid keeping a massive number of large unwanted RAW files) is:

1- View new JPEG files from the K-3 as 16:9 on a widescreen monitor (full screen).

2- When very good pictures are seen, move their same-filename 3:2 RAW files into a working folder.

3- Once all JPEGs have been viewed, delete the large number (for me) of unwanted RAW files, where the JPEG is already good enough.

4- Process the chosen RAW files in Lightroom (can also export to JPEG with a different resolution, e.g. 12032x8000 for interpolated 96MP, or 12032x6768 for 81MP if the RAW was 16:9 cropped!)

The best current option does seem to be to load the JPEGs from the K-3 into Lightroom, then crop them all as a first step before quickly viewing them all fullscreen. I will play with this

Thanks,
Paul

Paul, one thing to keep in mind is you'll find relatively few 16:9 images on the internet. They are mostly 3:2 or 4:3 (native to Oly and Panasonic) while 16:9 is mostly used for video. It's quite simple to crop JPEG images in Lightroom (or whatever) so that shouldn't hold you up much. You don't need to use RAWs to do that.

Maybe it shows that I don't print them, just view on widescreen monitors.

Coincidence: just saw a 645z review:
