K3 Studio tethering

Please can any K3 owner confirm or not if PK tether will work with the K3.

Also if connecting to a screen using HDMI does the K3 behave the same as the K5 series bodies?

Thanks in advance.

I can't speak to the PKTether question. But HDMI out is the same on the K-5 and K-3 - all of what would be displayed on the camera back screen is piped through HDMI to the remote screen.

It's not working!,
I hope that the 645Z software (when it is released) will also work on K3.

Unfortunately, PKTether only works with earlier cameras such as the K-5 and K-5ii. The developer could not get it to work with the K-30 and it also won't work with the K-3.

Does pktriggercord work?
Unlike PKTether, pktriggercord supports the K-30, so maybe it will work on the K-3?

Can any one try this please? I don't have a k3 yet but tethered is very very important to me, I can get by with hdmi out but it's a compromise, I wish Adobe would get pentax recognition in LR implemented.

Did you think about the possibilities of the Pentax Fluecard?

not a lot from the reports i have seen, i have used a eyefi card with the camera set to low res jpegs to both a pc and a ipad, its best suited to a ipad, the full size raw images take far too long to be received by either,

I just tried the Windows gui version on my XP box. No luck. pktriggercord GUI starts, says 'connecting', but freezes. Haven't tried the commandline or Linux version.

Part of the problem may be that, unlike all previous Pentaxes which show up as one USB drive, the K-3 shows as two USB drives when you plug it in via USB.

From the pktriggercord changelog:
QuoteQuote:
version 0.81.04 ( 2014-05-01 )
--noshutter ( thx Piotr Dlugosz )
Support for Samsung GX-1L ( not working )
K-5 IIs jpeg star calculation fix ( commandline )
Unknown camera segmentation fault bugfix
Limited support for K-3 ( not working )
Development of pktriggercord seems quite active, and the source code is available. Perhaps it won't be long before someone makes it work on the K-3.

If you haven't tried the O-FC1 Flucard, I suggest you do. Perhaps get a loaner from somewhere to evaluate it. There is also one for sale in the Marketplace.

On the subject of tethering, it does seem a pity that there is no wired tethering option for the K-3 like this guy is using for his Sports Illustrated shoot (see the images down the middle, where he is shooting tethered and an assistant is reviewing the images on a laptop):

My First Cover: Photographing Andrew McCutchen for Sports Illustrated

For such a critical shoot (big client, only 15 minutes to do the shoot), I'd be reluctant to rely on any wireless SD card solution (Flucard, EyeFi or any brand) to transport the images to an assistant.

Maybe the D645z is the right Pentax for the kind of shooting you want to do and with this solution you maybe find all the professional features you are looking for.

@pid the d645z will requires a major reinvestment in lenses in which case I might as well shift to nikon and get tethering.
Since the D645z is reputedly based or shares k3 features I wonder why the tethering software you have to buy for the D645z will not work with the K3?

Now it is official on the Z:

We could hope that the tethering will find its way to the K-3...

And a new firmware release (v1.10) for the 645Z has been released to support the tethering software:

QuoteQuote:
Changes to V1.10
- Correspond to the IMAGE Transmitter 2 (Image transfer software).
*When using with the IMAGE Transmitter 2, set the USB connection of camera to [PTP]
- Improved stability for general performance.
Perhaps the K-3 and other bodies may also need a firmware update to use the new Pentax tethering software.
