K-3 using 64 GB SD memory

I have just recently got a Pentax K-3. I ordered a package deal which included a Samsung 64 GB 10 SDXC memory card. When I installed into the camera I got a card error message. I contacted my vendor and they shipped me a new memory card. When I installed this card I got the same error message. Both the SD cards came in factory sealed packages. Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone know a solution for this error. The camera works well with Flu Card PRO and a SanDisk SDHC 10 32 GB memory card. Any and all help will be appreciated

Seems odd they would ship a card that is not compatible.

A couple of things to try:
  • Make sure the k-3 has the latest firmware; Latest K-3 Firmware Update : Software Downloads | RICOH IMAGING
  • See if the card works on your computer
  • Try formatting the card on the computer and then see if the camera reads it
  • Try formatting it in the camera and see if that helps
  • Send it back again and request a Sandisk card even if it is smaller. I use nothing but Sandisk Extreme or Extreme Pro

I have the exact same problem. The crazy thing is that the card works fine with both my 645D and my MX-1, just not the K-3.

FWIW, not so long ago I bought two Transcend 64GB Class 10 SDXC I UHS3 cards [R95, W 60MB/s] off Amazon when they had a deal on them for about $20 each. They work fine in my K-3, under the current firmware. Nice and fast cards too. The K-3 should be compatible with big cards with all those acronyms on them. Some Samsung 16GB SDXC cards I have also work fine.

I have Patriot LX 64GB Class 10 card which works just fine on K-3 with latest firmware... Never encounter any problems with any card on K-5II or K-3 up to now.

Pentax cameras can be finicky when it comes to memory cards. I've had no issues with Transcend or SanDisk cards, but have had issues with Sony and PNY Cards. As you've found out yourself, some work, some don't.

The same thing happened to me. To fix, all I had to do was use another SD card that the K-3 recognized and then use it to update the K-3 firmware. Everything was fine after that with the new card.

And if that fails, format the card using the free formatting software from the SD Association Web site. The full explanation is complicated, but the bottom line is that computer operating system support is poor for the required exFAT file system. The in-camera format will work, but only if the card is in "proper" state to begin with.

Another thing to look for: sometimes when I insert a card into the camera, the switch gets moved from "unlocked" position to "locked" position.

Some brand/size combos will have problems in different devices.

I've had no problems at all with 64GB cards from Lexar.

I got the same problem with my camera and SD 64Gb Samsung.
Before you do anything with the camera install the latest firmware and then check to see if camera recognize the card
Before I installed the latest firmware my camera behaved very weird.
Good luck!

This worked for me with some PNY cards and my K-5.
Cheers,
