You also have to keep in mind a K-3 is a current camera while the D800 is no longer in production. The two guys I know with D800s one has already bought a D810 and the other is planning to buy one within the year. You'd probably be looking at an early upgrade.

Yeah I have thought about that.. but still the d800 probably has the better resale value.
If only Pentax would give us a glimp into the very near future (lenses, body's etc)

K3 only came out last October, it's only been a year since it has been on the market (I remember it well because I had to pre-order it about a year ago). Take advantage of all the deals (if I were to get one now, a free batter grip would have been most welcome)!

That is an interesting notion.

Used D800 are about $2000 USD at KEH*. New old stock (also at KEH) are about $3000 USD. Used at B&H is about $1700 USD.

Used K-3 at KEH are about $850 USD. New at B&H are about $900 USD.

Yep, that is a no-brainer. Better buy a D800!

Steve

* To get realistic private party market value, multiply the KEH price by 0.85.

Given the Af issues with the D800m you'd have be nuts to buy one at all. On my trip this summer, my buddy had problems with his AF, then it dies altogether. A new battery didn't help, wouldn't power up. I only know 3 people with one of them and one is dead. You guys think Pentax is bad... what's going on with D800s is nuts.

D800 causes death in 1 of 3 owners

Tuco shoots with one and he is not dead.

Like Norm said - current models are more than enough to suppose the life of a flagship is 2 years just due to the upgrade cycle, not counting lenses for each platform.

645Z
(K-FF)
K-3
K5IIs still in stores
K-50
K-S1

I bought my K-5 just a few months before the K-5 II was announced. Still has plenty of life in it...

It really will be interesting to see whether the historic upgrade schedules continue to apply. We have been at a very high level in Pentax land since the K-5 came out. K5IIs and K3 certainly are improvements but not necessary for first rate pictures. If fewer new photographers are buying DSLRs there may not be as much profitability for the camera companies. Hopefully, Pentax will concentrate on new lenses to sell to existing users.

Ricoh has made great strides the last three years. They still need to work on autofocus and flash sync and hopefully their comments about video just mean they're being coy.

A lot can happen within the current upgrade cycle. A FF camera (if released) would likely introduce new (for Pentax) technology that might trickle down to a K-3II next fall and K-3 tech might show up as standard in the K-50 replacement.

I think we've already seen the hinged LCD (MX-1 & 645Z) and internal WiFi (WG-30).

I didn't think comparing a D800 with a K3 was fair. No matter the price of the body, I'm sure you are looking at EXPANSIVE lenses for the FF Nikon while I believe you could get away with cheaper, but still great, lenses on the K-3. The D800 might have you upgrade your computer as well with its file size... (half a joke).
With all things considered, (even if I LOVE my Pentax equipment), if I was able to start over and purchase a D800 straight off the bat and still have enough money for 2 good lenses, I would probably do it.

I think one of the reasons that NIkon (or Canon for that matter) D800 has better resale value (if people buy it) is that they can not lower the price of new camera too much unlike Pentax because they have too many current models to protect the sale. If they lower the price too much, it will impact the sale of lower end models (for example D600/D610 or D750 now).

Thank you all for your idea's, opinions and experiences.
The cards have been shuffled a bit. The d800 would ad up to 1475 with the 50mm F1.8 g lens but the best deal I can get with the K3 is body plus 35mm f2.4 (both new) for €950. €525 to spent ellswhere is just to big of an amount (part of it goes to a 2015 Ducati scrambler, but that'is a different story :-) to not choose the pentax.

The K3 is a wonderful camera with any lens on it.
