K-3 Already end of life?

Hello everybody,

In my search for a new camera (and system) I am almost ready to order an K-3. When I called my local dealer who can make me a fair price he told he could no longer order new K-3's. When I asked why, he told me the camera is end of life.
So, is it true and is the K-3 no longer in production or does he want to me make another choice...

End of life at just under a year and with no replacement announced? Unlikely.

Possibly it is the end of life for his shop only, Take a look on the Ricoh site, if a camera is still listed under current products then it is still available.

I was looking through various on-line sources yesterday and they are available everywhere at great prices.

items in store on eBay!

Even if it were true, it would only make it more worthwhile to buy the camera from someone who has it in stock then.

If a new model is coming out, you don't want to buy the newest thing on the market, it would not make a difference to the images that you can make and you would only be paying a premium for the newest thing. There are plenty of good deals online for the K3 now. As people have been saying for a while now, the middle to enthusiast camera models are not a limiting factor for most photography. In fact, a 'long-dead' K5II would be my recommendation to most people if I were asked what to get in Pentax land...and use the savings to get a better lenses.

Did he recommend another camera for you to get instead?

End of life is my favorite time to buy. I usually wait about a year if I can.

It sounds like your dealer may be confusing the K-3 with the K-30 or K-5. This is his loss since what he does not have, he cannot sell.

Pentax say the life cycle of their cameras is two years.

From the sound of it, it is possible that your dealer is confused k-3 with k-30 which has been out of production for a while....

Dealers know less than what we might think. I don't believe the K-3 is going anywhere for a while, at least not until the K-5 IIs disappears off the shelves.

Thanks everyone for your answers.
I'm convinced that the K-3 stil has some life to it.. :-)

Now I only have to choose between a d800 or a k-3 (k-3 is €300 cheaper)

....if the k-3 is only 300 euros cheaper, I'd get the D800, lol

it's about $1100 more over here at least

Yes, but d800 is second hand with 55k shots.... (but with 6 months warranty)

Oh that's slightly different, a used D800 for 300 euros additional is a closer comparison. I thought you were talking about new/last stock

Given that, I would probably still go for the D800 myself (just to have a 36MP FF), but the k-3 would be a faster camera overall (because of smaller files, and higher burst rate), and it is definitely no slouch in comparison.
