new Pentax camera serial numbers

I just noticed in my new Pentax k-3 camera, the serial number starts with 6xxxxxxx, for years (my k-7, k-5 and k-5IIs) the serial numbers starts in 4xxxxxxx and the incremental is not that big jump. It is most likely due to the fact that they have not manufactured/sold a lot of them. Going from 4xxxxxxs to 6xxxxxxx is obviously a big jump, but the most interesting point is that where are the camera models with 5xxxxxx serial numbers?

The serial numbers aren't sequential AFAIK.

That is my understanding as well. For the K-3, there are 25..., 48..., 49..., 60..., and 79... ranges with significant overlap in purchase date. Speculation is that the first two digits represent production facilities or specification sets (e.g. 25... cameras are all silver or prestige gunmetal finish).
