k3 and lightroom

Hi Guys

Quick question, i'm on LR4 and not 5 yet.. is LR4 capable of reading the DNG's correctly? I'm assuming i'll need LR5 to read PEF's?

If LR4 can read K3 dng's then I may hold out for LR6 which should be sometime early in the new year I think?

Thanks

Steve

Yes, LR4 can read the DNG's from your K3. It cannot read the PEF files. You'll need LR5 for PEF from the K3.

Yes there is no problem with DNG files from K3 in LR4. If you want to optimize I can send you the K3 profile I have done with my color checker passport for K3.

So you're telling me that now I have a K3 (for Christmas) I will ALSO have to buy Lightroom (again).... and that I cannot continue to use LR4? Why is this?

a. Only if you want to process PEF files (and why would you?), and b. Adobe want to make even more money from you (us)

I don't have a preference for the type of file. What is the difference? I know PEF is Pentax and DNG is Adobe...but aside from that... I have no clue if there are significant differences.

When I first started shooting RAW (18 months ago ish) I just picked one randomly and went with it so I have been using PEF files. I just guessed at it more or less...

I really don't have a significant library of images...only a few that I consider "pretty good" as it was my learning phase. I've only been taking pictures at all just over 2 years ago...

I don't mind switching if there isn't anything significant different about them.

At this point I'm just going to switch both cameras K5 and K3 to DNG.

I have LR4 and it works fine with my K-3 files, however:
LR-5 was the newest version when the K-3 came out so ability to read in EXIF properly was added to LR-5.

Are there any technical differences between PEF and DNG? I mean I know there are technical differences but is it anything noticeable or worthy of discussion?

This is my first ever camera upgrade so I'm going g to swap over to DNG because it seems like it might be more universal in nature...

It is the Adobe way, though upgrade pricing is usually not too bad. A CC subscription is another option. As noted above, you can still use LR4 with DNG and a third-party profile.

The two are functionally equivalent on all levels with the DNG serving as an alternative "wrapper" over the RAW data and metadata which stay the same for both formats. Full functionality with the DNG requires software that is capable of reading and acting on the Pentax-specific metadata.

There are minor differences with how Lightroom treats saving of catalog metadata to file between the two file types, but that is not important for most users. The feature is seldom used or even desirable.

No, everyone has been saying exactly the opposite - you do not need LR5, LR4 can read the K3 DNGs just fine.

Reading is a subset of full functionality and LR4 is only able to provide full functionality for the cameras that it is familiar with. That being said, the differences between a K-5 DNG and a K-3 DNG are probably fairly slight. The big thing I can see would be the ability to properly identify the camera model on import.

Summary: If you have a K3 and Lightroom 4, shoot in DNG.
If you have a K3 and Lightroom 5, shoot in anything you want.

I only have LR 3, so I assume that when I upgrade to K-3 I will also have to upgrade LR?

No. Just shoot in DNG. You'll be fine.
